Monitor and graphics card conflict!

After reading about the DVI sockets I turned off my pc and had a look at all of them.
Monitor is dvi-d dual link
Graphics card is dvi-i dual link
However, the cable which came with the Samsung monitor is DVI-D single link. Now if the monitor is a DVI-D why would they send that lead?
Because I'd unplugged all the pc I thought I'd have a go with my analogue lead again (that's what I used on my friends monitor which worked fine). The first time it all booted up it was fine so I went to start and restart (because that's one of the problems I have) and it got as far as the windows xp where you can see the bars running across the screen and then it went to a black screen. I hadn't changed the resolution or the hz or anything so I don't understand why it won't work with an analogue lead but it will work (so far as in if I don't reboot) with the wrong DVI cable. Will I be damaging anything by using this DVI cable? Thanks0 -
getting somewhere now I hope, have a look HERE for some info on the cables
I have nothing better to do!!!!

After looking here:

and looking at the socket on my monitor:
and the one on the graphics card:
I'm thinking I need a DVI-D Dual link cable. I am going to have to order one online so I've been looking at this belkin one:
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=264826#
but was wondering if you could only use it if your resolution is bigger than 1600x1200. Mine will be running at 1280x1024. And more importantly, if it's the right one? Thanks0 -

Does that mean I have to go out an buy a new monitor (this one is only 1.5 years old). NOOOOO (see below) Or is there likely to be some setting that I could be able to change and it will work fine? I've tried to ring Samsung but typically their Technical Department isn't answering because they have a large backlog of customer callbacks!
Hi Sherbie28
Some good news is that your monitor has a 36 month warranty http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/warranty/index.htm.Samsung_Warranty_Info wrote:What is NOT covered by your warranty The Samsung warranty covers manufacturing defects only. Please note that this does not include consumable items such as batteries, bulbs, ink cartridges etc.
The liability of Samsung Electronics (or its appointed maintenance agent) is limited to the cost of repair and/ or replacement of the product under warranty.
The warranty is invalidated if the defect is caused (howsoever) by misuse, neglect, and tampering or incorrect adjustment. It is invalidated if unauthorised persons carry out any alterations or repairs.
Also, the warranty is invalidated in the following cases.- For the repair of a domestic product used in a commercial environment
- For repair due to incorrect installation in your home
- For repair to any unit where the serial number has been removed
- Where any ancillary equipment not furnished or recommended by Samsung causes problems or damage that is attached to or used in connection with the product.
What do I do if I need service? In the event that you should require service assistance, please contact the Samsung Customer Care Team on 0870 SAMSUNG (O870 726 7864). Please have your full Samsung model number and serial number, date and place of purchase and a brief description of the fault/ query ready when contacting our Service Team.
If the product is outside the warranty period you should contact the Samsung Customer Care Team for a chargeable repair.
If the product is covered by an extended warranty, you should contact the dealer from whom this extended warranty was purchased (usually the same dealer from which the product was originally purchased).

Have you used the OSD (On Screen Display ) to set the source and resolution ? Use the natural resolution
Samsung have their own driver http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/productsupport/download/Model_Select.aspx?type=Monitor&typecode=2&subtype=LCD+Monitor&cmssubtypecode=202&model=710T&filetype=DR&language=
Another way to ensure your drivers are uptodate is to use MS Update - "Custom mode" - let the site investigate then look on the left for "Hardware options (optional) "
Read here about the cables here http://www.datapro.net/techinfo/dvi_info.html- I do not think you need a new different cable, unless the cable has been damaged, see if you can swap and test this as well.

Thanks for the extensive post. I have been trying to get in contact with Samsung but they are continually saying the Technical department is busy. I wanted to eliminate all other options before sending it away for repair because I am concerned that if the monitor isn't faulty I will be charged for them looking at it. I have used the OSD but it makes no difference.
I also clicked on your MS Update but I am using Mozilla and it doesn't load the page properly. I have my pc set to auto updates.0 -
Last night I made a restore point and unistalled the drivers. Turned off the AV and installed the latest drivers. The pc booted up in the wrong resolution so I changed it to 1024x768 @ 60hz (Usually have 1280x1024). Anyway I was able to reboot the system (which I haven't been able to do) but instead of seeing all the screens I had blank screens and the first thing I saw was the xp welcome page. There is no way I could leave it at that resolution because it's blurred and strains my eyes and there is no way I could work on it with that setting. So, I went back to the system restore point and as soon as it booted it came up with a blank screen and the floating "not optimum mode. Rec mode is 1280x1024 @60hz". So I turned it off at the power button and have left it until this morning when I turned it on and it came on as normal. Why can't it function at 1280x1024 if that's what Samsung recommends for my monitor?
Also if it works ok on someone else's monitor then why can't it function on mine?0 -
You have tried different monitors on your computer - have you tried your monitor on another computer - that would prove if there is a problem with with the monitor, or the cable.
Use IE for the updates it will be there if you have XP ....- if you do not try the suggestions or answer the questions asked then it is hard to help you.....
Have you checked the power supply in the pc ? Tried the drivers suggested ? Spoken to the shop ? Rung Samsung they will not take it back till they have done their tests over the phone - do not ring a tech dept knowing your error saying you have to send it back - let them confirm it - it is their product after all....Rich people save then spend.

Quick update: I've been that fed up with it that in the end I bought a new monitor, plugged it in and it works fine so it must have been the monitor. Thanks for all the help.0
