Emergency Spare Wheel
Today I notice one of my back tyres is quite flat. I drove it a short distance to a petrol station to see if it would pump up. It wouldn't work so I think there is something wrong with the valve.
When I got back home I went to put my spare on. I didn't realise that it was one of those skinny "universal" emergency tyres.
I have phoned around all my local garages and Tuesday is the earliest I can get a replacement tyre. Between now an Tuesday I will have to drive no more than 30 miles on the spare. I also know I am not supposed to exceed 50mph.
Am I safe keeping this tyre on until Tuesday?

Thanks for the reassurance. My worry is that it's such a different size to the other tyres.0 -
I drove 150 miles over the mountains in northern California with one; it was just fine. Don't drive too fast, though - the cornering is terrible!I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

the first thing i did was take the car to the top speed and try a couple of emergency stops (in a safe area) to see how it affected the cars balance, it was pretty good but the ABS and ESP may have been compensating but the light didn't come on and there was no brake pedal vibration
just drive as if its wet, brake a bit earlier, corner a little bit slower, be smother on the power
you should be fine0 -
Drive as though its wet is great advice, if it is wet drive as if it is icey or you will take it into a field at first corner.Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

if it's wet, don't forget to shout WOOOOOOO HOOOOOO as you go round roundabouts.0

I had to use mine, I put it on the back, and put the matching tyres on the front. It was fine for the few days I needed it.0

And hope you don't get a puncture.....
Is there nowhere that can repair the failed tyre today, or is it beyond repair?
With any luck and a bit of care though, you should be fine until Tuesday.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. If you think it's just the valve, why do you need a replacement tyre?
As you're going to have to use the space saver till Tuesday anyway, why not just go to your local tyre place and ask them to check if the valve is knackered, if the tyre has come off the rim, if there's a repairable puncture of if it really is goosed and needs to be replaced.0 -
OP says he drove to the garage whilst the tyre was flat and changed it when he returned home.
You don't have to drive very far on a flat tyre to ruin it0
