WARNING: Lego Universe Closing *Don't Buy Subscription Cards*

You can read about it here. Personally I feel let down by Lego over this its one of my sons favourite games and I find it hard to believe there was a lack of members.

    That's a shame :(
However MMORPG's cost a lot to keep running, and i'd guess that Lego's one probably had a lot more active monitoring than most by the GM's due to the age of the userbase :(

It looked fun, but I can see why it probably didn't do that well, as many MMORPG's only last a year or two before they have to shut down or change payment model, and with a game aimed at the younger end of the market I suspect they had trouble getting people to buy the subs, and couldn't go the "pay to play" method where you basically play a basic game free, but miss out on a lot of the extras (IE in some games you pay extra for access to certain areas, or equipment).
  • The first I heard of the closure of Lego Universe website was when my son shrieiked and came running down the stairs in floods of tears. Since Lego have my name and email as the child's parent from when I signed for him to join I would have appreciated advance notice to give time to prepare him and pass on the reasons in a way he could understand.

    Shame on Lego!

My other experiences of Lego have been so good. Their phone customer service I have found to be the best in any industry.

My second thought was why didn't they do a soft close and just keep it going and gradually wind it down over say 12 months. The lego site. This is Lego's answer - which I think is rather disingenuous.

"We thought about that too, but pretty soon you would have been bored playing in the same areas again and again. We decided it was better to stop now, while everyone is still enjoying the game and will leave with good memories."

Luckily kids have short memories because I can tell you that my little boy does not have a happy memory of Lego at present. He thinks he has been cheated.

I should say that the Lego business model was fatally flawed. The free content was so good and the perceived advantages of being a member so limited that to try and charge a premium (more than double that of Club Penguin which I suspect is the market leader) to belong to it was arrogant in the extreme. £7.50 for a month!

Lego will get over this but the sum they have saved must be measured against the poor PR they have generated amongst their key customer group.
