A skoda sounds like a good option to me, especially a TDI

If you want a small estate, i.e., about the same size as your Golf, I'd look at a Fabia estate, although the Octavia is massive inside and not that big outside.
TDi means that it has the turbo diesel engine, with ample power and 50+ miles per gallon. The downside is that it is more expensive than slower or thirstier cars but if you do quite high miles (unlikely if you've had your last car 17 years) it might be worth it financially. It could still be the best value even if it's not the chapest because the TDi is the best engine in the range.Debt at highest: September 2003 - £26,350
Debt now: £14,100

Skoda Octavia or Fabia Estate. 1.9TDI (Turbo Diesel Injection)
They do many different engines, though I'd go for the diesel as above or the petrol 1.8 20v Turbo, as they are brilliant engines.
For £5000, you should be able to pick up a 2000 to 2002/3 model with reasonable milage.
Skoda is part of the VAG group, as are Volkswagen, Audi and Seat.0 -

Turbo Diesel Injection, great engines, very economical and pretty quick.

Bear in mind, though, that a Diesel is likely to be more expensive, especially in the VAG models where it is appears to be the most popular option. If not doing too many miles, a petrol engine will be quieter, cheaper to buy, and usually cheaper to service (often with 20k miles service intervals). Also, do you need an estate - again they are usually more expensive than hatchbacks. A medium hatchback such as an Octavia or Mondeo would have loads of load space, and more space for passengers too.
For £5000, you could get a 3 year old Mondeo with loads more space, safety, equipment and refinement than your present car. I love my Mondeo, especially because it is so much car for so little money.
Perhaps look at https://www.honestjohn.co.uk for more advice and information.

If you are planning to keep it for a similar length of time it might be worth uping your budget a bit and buying a pre-registered car from one of the car supermarkets.
Main advantage is you will not inherit any possible problems.
Motorpoint have the Skoda Fabia at £10,999 for the 1.9 TDI
Delivery Mileage Fiat Panda 1.2 @ £5,499 (great fun wee cars, smaller than a golf).
Get yourself a copy of what car and draw up a short list then you can have a look around.0 -
Before considering a fabia take a look at this, it's interesting reading

we need more boot space as we now have a beagle dog and we like to go camping as well , thus thinking an estate car was idealkippax1966 wrote:Bear in mind, though, that a Diesel is likely to be more expensive, especially in the VAG models where it is appears to be the most popular option. Have you considered a Citroen Berlingo. I have had one for 5 years and it is just brilliant. So much space, cheap to buy and cheap to run. Have a test drive and see what you think! (Not mine, at a dealer:D)0
