Is it possible to "lock" Internet Explorer?

Is there an option to personalise Internet Explorer on an individual PC such that it can only be operated through the use of a password?

What purpose do you want this to achieve?

If you're trying to stop someone browsing the internet without the password, it's pointless - they could just run a browser off a USB stick and circumvent your password.

However, if that's what you want to achieve, there are other ways which can be more effective, depending on how computer-savvy your opponent is...

As mentioned above, requiring a Windows login may help, but if they know how to boot the PC from a LiveCD they can get round that too.
  • Neither of which answers the lady's pretty straight question.

AFAIK Microsoft has always been careful not to allow a feature like this on IE. Their reasoning probably goes that they haven't invented an internet browser only to see it not being used and generating more traffic for them. They care less than a fig about your wish for privacy or whatever.

The feature has been there for well over a decade.
    • Go to Control Panel, Internet Options.
    • Click the Content tab and click Enable in the Content Advisor frame.
    • Adjust the slider to "None" and click Apply.
    • Type in the password you want to use then confirm it in the box underneath
    • Click OK
Leave a hint if you want but remember it can be seen by anyone who tries to use Internet Explorer.

I just came back to mention that it's possible to 'break' this from within the Windows registry if you know where to look. I suppose it's more of a side effect than an actual feature really.

Yes. Use Group Policy Editor to restrict access to certain programs for each user.
