Blackcurrant jam doughnuts are my favourite, then custard ones from mr T. I don't like the ones from mr S.
Although I don't want anything now I've filled up on beans

Our boys know we're in a mess but importantly dealing with it. Occasionally I wish I hadn't told them but on the whole its better for things to be out in the open I think.
They don't know figures and I just hope they will learn form our experience. I can honestly say family life improved once we faced facts and started the DMP although it has been so tight some months especially recently.

My question is though, has anyone reading told their teenagers of their monetary situation and in how much detail ?

    Thankyou! X

Hi Pinot, it's a difficult one, isn't it? Mine are older than yours (18 & 20) and both away at uni now.

Like yours, mine know that we don't have money to burn and are watching our spending. However they don't know that we have serious debt issues, and I intend to keep it that way. I don't want them to know just how stupid I have been. I think it's a bit different for you because your debt seems to be linked more to the recession than to over-spending (or at least that's the impression I get from your diary).

Being older and sem-independent, I don't think mine would particularly worry about our situation in the way that yours might. But if I am honest, I would be ashamed to admit what a mess I have made of this aspect of my life and would hate them to lose respect for me, so I will keep it secret from them for my own selfish reasons.

I hope you and dd1 have made peace now, looks like you had a rough night by the times of your posts. Still, at least you got your soa done, and I will have a look through it now x

Evening all, actually it's pretty late so you are all probably in bed.

Going off on a bit of tangent here , but after a bit of a ding dong with Dd1 this evening it has come to light that when she wanders in and sees me on Mse , she has got it in her silly head that I am posting about how naughty she is to the world and his wife !! Couldn't be further from the truth she is an angel, but, every now and then the sullen hormonal teenager rears her head ! Anyway I digress, the argument was about her using her phone after curfew when we were trying to grab an hour together as a family and Dd2 wanted to sing us all a song she has been practising. She was sneakily using her phone, got told off and the whole evening got a litte stressful ! Anyway as I said above she thinks I post things all over the place telling people all about her, not sure why she wouLd think this? As I explained its really no different to her using facebook or her posting BBm statuses neither of which do I do or really condone.

So, I burbled an excuse about what it is I am typing about, but my question is do I tell her? I wanted to shield the girls from the situation although I do regularly explain things are tougher than ever before etc etc and they are good girls, they rarely ask us for anything, but I was so angry that she felt she had the right to question what I was and wasnt typing. I'm not sure I am really making myself clear, my head is spinning.

My question is though, has anyone reading told their teenagers of their monetary situation and in how much detail ?

    Thankyou! X

That's a real tough one. My eldest is 11 and no she doesn't really know about debt only that we are trying to be more frugal.lt just then upsets her as she equates being poor with being homeless, hungry etc. But..we have begun to talk to her about these types of things ( not just debt but wider ethical and moral issues) and one of the aspects I am adamant about is that part of my upbringing of her and my other DD will be teaching her about financial integrity and to be able to think for herself, not just blindly getting into debt with no appreciation of the consequences.

So..when youre calm and in a time and place of your choosing, I think you raise why you're sometimes worried but that you have a plan and that you and your OH are getting through it together. Agree with other posters no need to get into amounts and volumes...it's the stress of it all that will be the thing.

And..we're here for you you know!!

  • Hi Pinot,

My little one is too young to understand about things like that so I don't know what I would do. Its difficult because part of me would not want to worry them, part of me would not want them to know I had been reckless (mine is recklessness not recession lol!) because I wouldn't want to give an excuse to either use that against me or follow in my footsteps "because I did it". Being a parent is so tough :o

I don't know how people who have multiple children afford all the activities. DD is always coming home with things for school wanting money, then she does a couple of odd activities which all need paying for and I am thinking of getting her swimming lessons as I think she really could do with learning to swim - it all adds up and I only have the one. Horse riding is an expensive hobby too :o

Anyway back to the really important matter at hand.....

I think custard, then jam, then apple in order of preference, although I think it is Greggs does an apple danish with white icing on top that is yummy (albeit not very good for the waistline at all..... :rotfl:)
    Just keep swimming!
  • Another no spend day today, courtesy of the free tixs. Dont all go rushing to see the movie, but if you can grab any freebies its worth a couple of hours out , but thats about it !:) Was a bit arty farty, but also quite violent with ewan MacGregor attempting a very suspect American accent !:rotfl:

On another note though, can I just say a big thankyou to everyone who responded to my Dilemma last night with your words of wisdom ! It really is appreciated, you are so insightful and its always a massive help to hear other peoples opinions. Mr Pinot decided to tell her a little more than she already knows but not enough to worry her, but to repeat again that when I am typing on here its about money and work stuff, but not about her behaviour, which is always really good, I hasten to add again !! Well I suppose last night was a bit of a moan, but I needed to get it off of my chest :o Anyway all is cool beans ( as she would say !) in the Pinot Residence this evening, parents evening went great and we didnt even have to bunk off, we made it round and to the movies just in time. Bit of a rush but we made it !

Nanny Pinot arrived to babysit with a Spag Bol so I didnt even have to feed anyone :j. They can all look forward now to tomorrows delight of Fish fingers, mash and beans.

Anyway thank you all again :kisses:
