Moved supplier - now what?

Hello all,

I have recently moved from Spark to EON for my electricity and gas.

The electricity was switched at the beginning of October, and the gas on 1st November (due to a silly objection by Spark, twice).

I am wondering if I now need to contact Spark for a final bill, or whether they should do it automatically? As it's been over a month since I left them on electricity and I've not received anything, I am unsure. I have heard that it is automatic, but how are they supposed to know my final readings if I don't tell them?

Also I had to give meter readings to EON a few days before my switch was completed. They have then used these readings as the start readings for my bill. Technically I am being overcharged by a few days. Is there anything I can do about this, or this just a standard issue?

Thanks,
Matthew

Unless you took additional readings on your actual start date(s) with Eon, then Eon will have to use these? But then you could argue with Spark that these are your closing readings with them for them to give your final bill (unless you have already given Spark different, later, readings?). If Spark don't have any other readings, then give them the ones you gave Eon, so all is square, and I can't see how they can prove otherwise?

When I've switched, I've had final bills quite quickly; but I'd be on to Spark say, by the end of the month if you've had nothing from them?

When I last changed supplier (many years ago) I still contacted them with the reading as the bill took forever to come through.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

I did take addition readings, so could give them to EON (but haven't as yet), so I was wondering if this was a normal thing to do or if I should just leave it?

I guess my start readings are giving from EON to Spark (as the poster after you said), so everything will tie up anyway.
When you change supplier something called a D0010 flow is issued out to all parties involved, this D0010 contains your final / open read with the new and old supplier.

I see. So if the start readings that EON have are a few days before the actual start date was, and EON gave these to Spark, Spark will make the loss on the few days, and EON will profit on it instead?

Yes, they won't quibble over a few days' worth. When I switched to Npower I submitted a meter reading to their crappy website and it didn't go through so they estimated my final meter reading which was around 300 units out (which worked out in my favour with SP which was the slightly cheaper rate before their price rise).

When you get bills just make sure the final reading with Spark is the same as the start reading with Eon. If it isn't then tell one or both of them and get them to be the same and recalculate their bill. Whether you hassle Spark for a final bill is up to you and your cash flow but I would just sit back and wait and see if they ever get round to sending it.

    Hi mattgad,

Just thought I would pop on and clear this up for you.

When you change supplier you provide a set of meter readings to your new supplier, they will use these to start your billing from.

The new supplier (E.ON) will also send the meter readings you have provided to your old supplier, via a third party company who verify the readings.

These same readings are then used to produce your final bill with your old supplier.

This process can take a few weeks to complete.

As another has rightly pointed out, make sure the start reads on your E.ON bill are the same as the final reads on your spark bill.

If you need any help from me, just let me know.

    Helena :)
