JSA Emergency Payment

Hi Everyone!

I was just wondering if somebody knowledgeable about the benefits system could give me some advice.

I applied for an emergency payment of JSA today for help with the costs associated with starting work on Monday. I got a call at about 14:20 to tell me it was accepted and payment would be made by Internet Electronic Fast Payment.

At 17:30 I started to get a little nervous, as I know fast payments tend to be instantaneous, so I phoned the benefits office to check everything was OK. The guy I spoke to told me payment had been made, but couldn't tell me when.

It's now 19:53 and still no sign of payment. Is this usual? Or is there a cut-off time where it would credit next-day instead?

Thanks for your help...

  • What is "Internet Electronic Fast Payment"? I've never heard of this. I've also never heard of the job centre doing this.

    Do you mean "Bank Transfer"?

  • I meant Internet Fast Electronic Payment. I assume they mean Faster Payment Service, it was the term both the guy at the jobcentre and the guy on the phone used. I've never heard of it either! I'm assuming it's an internal thing as I heard the advisor refer to it as IFEP with a colleague nearby.
  • Sorry but i'm flummoxed maybe someone else will come along soon who knows more about this.

  • Thanks anyway, I'm baffled too. If they'd used terms I know of, then I'd know where I stand :undecided
  • fast payments are within 2 hours, so there is defo a problem.

    Interim Fast Electronic Payment (IFEP)
    • IFEP is an electronic bank-to-bank, same day payment method which can be used to make urgent payments to customers.
    • Using a clearing method known as CHAPS (Clearing House Automated Payment System), IFEP provides a safe, convenient and efficient method of making payments to customers which would otherwise be made by cheque, and allows the customer to access the payment within the same day.

But although it is meant to clear same day it does depend on the time the transaction was started -about 3 hours clearance seems to be the usual. Plus I believe that it only takes place during bank opening hours

However and this may be a related problem.

A payment into my bank should have been made last Thursday 3rd Nov.
Telephoned DWP 1pm and they rang me back at 4pm and said that the 'computer had a glich'. Not to worry an 'Emergency Bank Transfer' has been made and should hit my bank by 4.30pm.
    Nothing

Telephoned 12noon Friday 4th. DWP rang me back at 3pm and said that someone had forgotten to do it on Thursday. However I was assured that the payment had been resent and would be in my account by 5pm.
    Nothing!!

    Checked today - Nothing

So will ring again on Monday and instead of this constant telephoning and waiting, will suggest that last weeks payment be added to the next one due on the 17th. I would hope that that will give them enough time to get their heads together and have it sorted.

I just wish they were honest in the first place on Thursday and told me that it wasn't being sent and will be added to the next payment.

It has caused no end of trouble as I had to go to the bank and transfer the equivalent money out of savings into the current account to cover the shortfall.

Thank you! Interim not internet! ha! 22 and I'm already going deaf....

I didn't realise it would be sent by CHAPS, all makes sense now. Should be with me by Monday then hopefully, as long as there isn't an issue as per the other poster.

    Thanks for your help.
