    This works a treat. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0039TFC7U

It looks like any other USB stick but is actually a digital TV tuner.

    A few things to consider:

What is your TV and what are it's connections and capabilities?
Some recent TV's have USB slots and can play some media files. Does your TV have HDMI, DVI, Scart, Component, VGA etc connections?

Then you can either connect your PC to your TV or get a separate media player.

There are many (hundreds) different Media Players with different capabilities. New chipsets have just been released which are more capable than previous generations.

Something to watch out for is whether the media player can handle MKV header compression. Many cannot and it means messing around removing it before the video is watched. That's fairly quick to do but it means the video cannot just be watched without doing anything.

NAS's are an option, but the media player would need a network connection. Newer chipsets have faster gigabit ethernet connections.

    This looks promising, it's new.
http://www.iboum.com/artkill/chipsets.php this is one of the best sites for media player details, it lists just about all media players.

Cheaper players are more limited. You can get them from around £20+

Another thing to watch out for is the Audio support. Many media players have limited audio support. AAC-HE v2 is not supported by many media players. DTS support can also be limited. Audio Pass through again was limited on some chipsets.

Some media players offer net access, online video access and some offer bit torrent support although they are no safer than using a PC. They can just as easily be caught if you use torrents for copyrighted files.
