Just want to be sure ive got this right - re WTC

Hi

I currently get WTC but am moving in with my boyfriend in the first week of december.

Our joint incomes will be too high to claim WTC any more, so there is no point making a joint claim, so do i just call them and tell them i want to stop the claim???

Also my friend told me (im pretty much definate this is wrong - but just wanted to be sure) that i will still get my tax credits until April next year, as it is based on last years income and as we werent living together at any point last year it will be only taken on my income until new tax year (as i said im pretty definate this is wrong.)

Thanks for any help :)

You would need to ring tax credits of the change in circumstances. They will give you a correct answer rather than a few guesses by random people on the internet.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • You would need to call the helpline on the day you move in together; unfortunately these changes can't be done in advance. Although they may use the previous year's income it is also based on current personal circumstances, so entitlement as a single person would end when you move in. They will do an estimate when you call to see whether you will then qualify as a joint applicant with your boyfriend.

Thank you both. Didn't realise you couldn't do it before - I was going to tell them week before, but guess I'll just ring them on day then!

When you move in together your claim will stop and will have to make a claim as a couple. Any changes in income wouldn't have been taken into account if you had just had a wage increase, but as you're now claiming as a couple then it's a completely new claim.

That's how it worked when I went from single claim to joint claim a few years ago, and again when went from double claim to single claim, it may have changed but that's how it worked then :)
