MPPI info needed pls

Hi everyone,
Basically, I work part-time (variable hrs so variable pay) and attend uni f/t.
DH (previously chief earner in h/hold) lost his job in July during probationary period. Employer said he wasn't up to the role (supervisory role, never done mgmt before), and rather than help him, got rid of him.
We have MPPI and due to ex-employers giving them all kinds of shoddy info they won't pay out saying none of the info he supplied to them has been backed up by ex-employers. Amongst other things, the one who got rid of him blatantly lied and told the MPPI company that DH had been in charge of more people than he was (so making him out to be a liar), and the one before that seems to have got confused and bigged his role up thinking it was for a new job!!! Also, this employer can't find any details for DH as he was agency and the agency has restructured, (seemingly) leaving no trace of him.
Because of this we are now accruing arrears on our mortgage.
Given that my contract is p/t and variable and DH has been unable to find f/t work (p/t job in pipeline, but still only 16hrs), I am seriously considering cancelling the MPPI contract.
I am well aware that we won't get another due to arrears, but had they paid out then a) we wouldn't have accrued them in the first place and b) our monthly premium could be better spent elsewhere. Is it worth continuing to pay of they won't pay out and neither of us brings home a great wage?
As it is, we will continue to accrue arrears as his wages will be only marginally more than the JSA he has been getting (arrears accrual is for as long as our mortgage co. agrees to reduced payments...but I'm not sure how much longer they're going to do that for either).
Any advice/suggestions greatly welcomed and thanks in advance.
