How long on file?

Afternoon all :)

Two questions that I hope you can answer please.

1. In my youth, I opened a lot of store cards and credit cards because of offers (10% off etc) I used them once, paid the balance and closing them. This was in 2006 (had at least 4 open at once) Do these have any baring on new applications? Are these removed after 6 years?

2. I missed a payment on my credit card earlier this year. I have subsequently paid off this card, but have been turned down for other CCs recently. Would this have made that much of a difference? How long will it be before this is removed from my file?

Thank you for your help in advance :)

No they are not removed after 6 years, removal doesnt come into it. They are probably just dormant.
Do yu get any paperwork at all from them.
Why not ring each one and check. Close them if they are, if you wish.

The reason I ask about paperwork is that some ccs have now started charging a dormancy fee of £20 per year. Amex did this,
I cancelled mine when I stopped using it, just in case.

As for missing a payment, i dont know tbh, cant see it having that much affect apart from it being on your credit file,

Perhaps someone else might shed more light on it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

If the show as settled accounts that are no longer active the accounts will go from your credit file 6years after the date they were settled/closed. If any are still active now then close them, but they won't be removed for another 6years.
If closed they won't be likely to have any impact on your credit file (assuming that you made the payments on time).

1 missed payment alone would be unlikely to stop you getting a new card - although it could be a contibuting factor if there were other potential issues.

How many cards have you applied for recently (last 6months)? who did you apply to that turned you down?

What debts do you have on your file? what other credit accounts? are you employed? are you on the electoral roll? are you financially associated with anyone else?

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your responses.

I have 8 accounts (!!) listed that all say they are settled. I don't receive any paper work from them at all.

I applied for 2 credit cards (one Lloyds and one Santander) At the time I applied I had two credit cards with balances on (MBNA - £3.5k and BC - £4k) so I wanted to transfer them both for 0%, but they said no :( I have a sole account (salary, day to day banking), joint account (all house stuff) and a student account (which I'm paying off)

I'm employed, on the electoral roll and I'm financially linked to my BF. I shall blame him for all of this! :p

I don't need another card now (as I'm a super money saver now!) but it is just in case for the future
