Belfast is way behind....

Does anyone else find it embarassing that Belfast & Northern Ireland is on the increase yet we have have licensing laws which are ancient. Compared to the rest of UK & Europe its a joke.
The MTV EMAs this weekend are a prime example, nowhere is legally allowed to have a drink after midnight on Sunday night (unless your in a hotel). Belfast City Council will not grant a special event or late night extension.
Surely its time by next year 100 years since the sinking of the Titanic when Belfast will be in the spotlight once again to change the laws. Nothing drastic just allow a licence for Bars and one for nightclubs.
Is that asking too much?
12 years after the Good Friday agreement isnt it time for change?

So we are to change are licensing laws just to suck up to a few celebs?
And the Good Friday agreement. What has that got to do with this topic?0 -
No not just for Celebs for the country & our capital city in particular. The reason I mentioned Good Friday agreement is that its been 10 odd years since we have had peace and our own government in Stormont therefore the time is right, and long overdue in my opinion.0

Hmmm I know where you are coming from but I do not think it would be a good example to do it as a one off on a non-holiday, Sunday night.Always overestimating...0

I understand a one-off event is not ideal but surely it is long overdue, compared to the rest of the UK0

I was in dublin twice in the last month and their off-licences and some of their bars were shut before 12, and I was in the Temple bar area......don't know where you're coming from Darren?:doh::undecided0

Can you explain what the advantage is in allowing people to get blotto after 12 midnight on Sunday is or what exactly we're missing out on? Don't you think that with present, vastly increasing levels of alcohol abuse in society it might be NI that is ahead rather than behind in maintaining so "archaic" a law?
Less than half of one side of the community voted for the GFA. Those voters later went on to vote for a party which trounced the other party that negotiated it. It has no legitimacy save by imposition by the authority of the army and PSNI.
As for that shower of parasites arriving on the Lagan, they arn't welcome.0 -
Ive always managed to get alcohol after midnight in any club ive been in on a sunday night
until at least 2am.

Don't forget, drink and drive and you'll end up being disqualified
Not sure what the second half of your post is all about but it seems to be a tad OTT. From previous posts you seem to have issues with certain aspects of this country but this isn't the place to air them. Please keep this forum peaceful.0 -
This was consulted on a while ago. Department for Social Development is responsible.
24hr 7 days a week licensing please. No rushing drinks before closing time or during happy hour, no fighting in the streets when everyone gets dumped on the street all at the same time and argues over kebabs, taxis etc.
Works in other European countries.
Also, even if pubs/clubs were allowed to open 24/7, doesn't mean they would, they'd all adjust to different opening times according to when they made money.0 -

The problem with our licensing laws it the fact they are not open to competition. Set amount of licenses means no new ones are created. Companies hoard them.0
