Why not simply subtract the first from the last meter reading?
if you do that, do you get a different result?

You will with the gas, unless you know what CV was used for the conversion from units to kWh, and it was the same for every bill. Doesn't make much of a difference though.
    Works well on electric though.

Their figures are for usage over the last 12 months, not a prediction for the next. I wouldn't say no to a refund though, given that they say I used less over the last 12 months compared with what their 12 individual statements say I used when you add them all up. :D
I have a spreadsheet myself and the usages over 52 weeks change every week (I read the meter weekly). Last year's first week in November might have colder, warmer. I might have washed more clothes, gone out more, cooked more....anything. My average on a weekly basis changes up to 20% from the Npower estimate.

My weekly / monthly usage is as near as makes no difference year on year since retiring, so a spread sheet would not be of much use to me, other than as a matter of curiosity. ;)

However, it may be of help to those trying to monitor their usage.

Is the spread sheet one of your own ?

Do you, or any other posters, know of a downloadable spreadsheet, spreadsheets for gas and electricity that would be of use to other posters wanting to monitor their use ? :)

It's one of my own. I am home most of the time as well but just going out just 1 day in the week compared to the same week last year makes a difference. If I'm in I'll use the telly, the computer, the kettle and so forth so maybe 1 more kw per week than this time last year.

You can also tell when it was cold Jan 2010 and Dec 2010 were both bitterly cold. Electricity is used to pump water around the central heating so your usage goes up but because it wasn't the same month that was cold then the averages are different. So far this year I have used less than last year due to Jan 2011 being warmer than Jan 2010 and if it continues to be mild then this years calendar year bills will be 10% to 20% lower.

OP wanted to know why the averages given weren't what they expected and that's how the supplier calculates it by looking at the previous weather and making adjustments to your forecast.

I have a smart meter and get monthly statements from E.On with actual meter readings. They are always dated on or just after the 1st of the Month.

So that makes it pretty easy to calculate my annual usage, just by adding up 12 consecutive monthly usages.

Doing that for the 12 statements dated 2/12/10 through to the statement dated 2/11/11, I get.

    Electricity 4992 kWh
    Gas 15763 kWh

Why, then, does E.On come up with completely different numbers, i.e.

    Electricity 4,906 kWh (a 2% error)
Gas 14,494 kWh (an 8% error)

The statement says that these are based on actual usage from Dec 10 to Nov 11, although as the statement was dated 2/11/11 they can't know my Nov 11 actual usage.

I just can't work out how they do their calculation, which they presumably use as the basis of the DD payments.

    Hi StephenM

Not sure to be honest. Our Smart programme is in its infancy and I haven't had too many dealings with it yet so not clued up on how the monthly statements relate to actual bills.

However, we've a specialist Smart Meter team who I'm sure can advise me. Therefore, have contacted them for more info. Will let you know once I've an answer.

Sorry can't give an immediate answer but will do my best to find out.

  • One point is that last winter was unusually cold so perhaps the EOn system is assuming that your usage over last winter was slightly higher than would have been the case in a "normal" year and thus their estimate for the next 12 months assumes that you'll use a little less this winter?

    Hi StephenM

Been speaking to a colleague at our Smart Meter Centre about this over the last couple of days.

Consensus of opinion is, it's possibility related to changes made last April to the way we've been trialling Smart Meters.

There were a couple of issues, since resolved, analysing info taken from the meters. It may be this had an impact on the data used to predict your future usage.

This may, though, be completely wrong and I apologise in advance if it is. The only real way of seeing why there was a mismatch is to look at individual cases.

To this end, my colleague is standing by ready and willing to investigate further if you wish. Just drop an email to the address in my Profile and I'll have your particular case looked at.

Sorry can't give anything more definite StephenM but happy to take forward if you like.
