Can this be done in Windows XP??

I've recently changed my package with my isp to give me more bandwidth. However, 75% of my allowance is for off peak usage only (1am - 8am).

Now this doesn't really bother me because I can schedule downloads to start after 1am. However, I don't want my computer sitting idle after about 3am just eating power! My question is, is there a utility within Windows, or something that can be downloaded so that I can schedule my PC to shutdown at a certain time??

If you use Download Accelerator a free copy is available off the web, that has an option to close doewn your computer on the completion of downloads.

Off the top of my head you could look in power options and tell it to shutdown after a certain period?

You can do it with the task scheduler in Control Panel, you need to create a BAT file and just schedule it run when you want to shut it down.

    Have a look here

If you're happy with using a command line you can use the 'at' scheduler to do it as well, you should be able to just schedule the command to run with that if I remember correcty, it's a long time since I used 'at' though.
It's my problem, it's my problem

And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Try a scheduled task with (and I'm guessing) shutdown /s (might need to be in batch file).

Ahh Bill beat me to it, teach me to refresh before posting ;-)
  • You don't need a batch file. Just a scheduled task which runs c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe -f -s.

Thats fast shutdown, and dont take any notice of any "End Program" dialogs.

Correct, however as the OP wants the shutdown to occur at 3am and is likely to be asleep at that time, they wouldn't want End Program dialogues popping up and preventing the shutdown.
