Ramdon question, Employer asking age

Nowt major.... Just wondering really, when ringing to ask about a job vacancy, is an employer allowed to ask your age straight away? As I know they aren't allowed to on an app form, so just wondered if the same applied in telephone calls.

They're not allowed to discriminate because of age but they may still be allowed to ask the question

There may be an age stipulation by insurers for driving vehicles etc.

what sort of job is it?

For what? For a pole dancer, probably :D, possibly for an HGV driver - or any long-distance driver if the company's insurance precludes people over a certain age.

But, with all this talk of people having to work well into their 70s (as I probably will now) 58 should not be too old for most jobs!
  • It was for a weekend receptionist at a care home, nothing particularly exciting or nothing age related like bar work or driving....

Of course, it's a possibility that they WANT an older person.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.
  • Or a younger person. No lol. Its more than likely for insurance purposes. Was there a clue in the advert for the job or job details?
