Moving home - transfer line or cancel?

I currently have a BT line for broadband only (it pains me). I have had the line for over 2 years, so i'm not tied down to a contract.

I am due to move home at the end of November and just wondering whether or not to transfer the BT line then change it to a cheaper provider, or just cancel the line and go with a cheaper provider from the onset.

Does anyone have an experience with this?

Nonsense. You're on a month-by-month contract now unless you have agreed to a 'renewable' contract in order to get the Evening & Weekend calls plan free of charge (saving £3/month).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I pay £13.90 a month so that is just basic line rental. I have never made a call using the telephone line my plan is listed as unlimited weekend.

This was put on in August last year, when I told BT that I never use the phone and do not want any services whatsoever other than the most basic (£13.90 a month, it was less than) line rental.

It seems you must have some type of call plan though in order to have a telephone line in the first place, hence the unlimited weekend
  • The key factors in your decision:

    1. If you "move" the line and remain with BT, will there be a connection charge (c. £129) at the new property anyway, or will it be free? Check that, then bear in mind:

    2. The move will restart a minimum term as will free setup if it were to be chargeable above, 18 months I think. So you won't then be able to migrate away for 18 months. In which case you're better off having your new chosen provider set the line up, but you'd then want to ask them what their connection fee is, if it applies.

When you have all the numbers, including what the line rental will be, you can work out which is best.

There is only a £130 if an engineer needs to be called out to do any work. That shouldn't be the case since there is an active BT line at the property at the moment.

In fact. Primus is by far the best choice, as they don't charge either if the existing infrastructure is still working. If it's not then its £69 which is cheaper than BT's £130.

    Cool, all sorted, cheers.
