Getting Santander to increase overdraft

I opened a Santander "Preferred current account" just over 3 months ago. It's the one that gives an interest free overdraft if you pay in at least £1000 a month. I was a bit disappointed that the overdraft they gave me is only £200. Does anyone know if it's worth applying for an increase so soon after opening? Or do they probably have a policy of only reviewing it after you've had it 6 months or something?

PS - Before all the Santander haters come in, the account was all set up quickly and I got my £100 switching bonus after about 6 weeks so I'm quite pleased.

  • I think you can adjust the overdraft amount with the online banking website. If it refuses you need to appeal to the underwriters with evidence if thats requested like pay slips. They may ask you to wait until they see you conduct your account well before raising it. This i think is 4 months.

I have a santander student account and i'm appealing the OD limit they allowed me to have which was 0 lol i have no nasties on my credit just a lack of credit. it takes 48 hrs for the appeal but i'm not expecting anything to come of it i am very single minded so i will appeal the appeal and take it to the ombsman, i'm not sure if they can do anything but the way my account has been opened is in my opinion below reasonable standards. If you go into branch they should be able to deal with it for you. But if you read my thread it wasn't an easy appeal process.

Any branch can see at a glance what size overdraft you can have.

Generally you need 4-6 months of decent turnover to be offered a large OD.

When I opened my account July 2010 I could not have an overdraft.

    By December 2010 I could have up to £1400 and a C/C with a £3400 limit.
  • Are students accounts seen in a similar fashion for instance if i get my salary paid into the account will it have an postitive affect on my score.
or because its a student account you are limited to the products that are offered as most students don't have a job too.
