ACER Aspire 5720 locking up

Hi all,
My Acer laptop, running Vista has recently started locking up for no apparent reason when left doing nothing for a while (i.e. I when leave it alone and go and do something else...).
It's almost like when it's gone into screensave mode(?) and the screen is black (not blue), but pressing a key to wake it up does nothing. To clear it I have to power down using the main on/off key then power up again. Sometimes the laptop runs a CHKDSK operation on power up, which always passes. All scans & AV are up to date and clear (Norton & Spybot) and CCleaner has been run also. The HDD (Seagate) is less than a year old too - I replaced the original for a larger one.
Any ideas please? Many thanks.

Are you sure it is not going into hibernation, which would need a short press on the power key to revive it?Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0

Perhaps you need to change a setting in Power Options.0 -
Thanks for the replies. I deliberately put it into sleep mode (Fn+F4) and the illuminated ring around the power on button goes from green to red; when the pc locks up the ring stays green so it looks like this isn't the problem. I also had (for the first time) tonight a situation whereby the screen saver was activated - a key press brought the pc back to life but I couldn't then bring either outlook or firefox back to life (both were minimised at the bottom of the desktop screen. Again I had to shut down using the power on button and start up all over again
