hosting mulitple sites requiring SSL

Probably not the best section to put this but I know a few hosting resellers frequent this board and they maybe able to offer advice, or even the best place to go for further advice.

Basically I have a couple of website of my own and I manage a site for someone else currently (nothing major all basic stuff). All of which are currently hosted on a godaddy account and all are working really well.

Now though I have added an opencart site and would like to get an SSL certificate, not a real problem as I can add one through godaddy and change the primary domain to the one hosting opencart. The problem I have next though is someone who also uses my hosting is wanting to run an opencart too with SSL. With godaddy I can have multiple SSL BUT they will only show the primary domain in the seal, which is no good as the two sites aren't linked in anyway by trade, owner, products etc they are totally seperate.

I need some advice on how I can achieve having mulitple sites requiring multiple SSL, ideally an SSL I can obtain from anyway as the other limitation with godaddy is that I can't use any third party SSL it has to be their own on their shared hosting.

Obviously I don't want to be paying hundreds of £££ per month as it just wouldn't be worth hosting the 2nd opencart. I am not sure what options are out there hence asking for help. Currently the only way around it I can see is to just a 2nd hosting account with godaddy (cheapest package) and dump the 2nd opencart onto that hosting account leaving 1 opencart and all the other sites on the current package.

Suggestions, ideas even a better explanation of how things work would be grateful lol.

cheers

Give Vidahost a ring on 01225 808 766 (they are in the Bath area) and speak to Dominic.

They handle all my hosting stuff, including Opencart and SSL and are absolutely brilliant to deal with.

It's one of those rare companies where you can actually 'phone up and have a proper conversation with someone who really understands their subject and can explain things at any level.

thanks for the info. Are you running more than one opencart and more than one SSL certificate?? If so what package are you running with them?

I have a couple of their second tier packages which they call "Starter" and have about five sites running from them. Only one Opencart and one SSL at present but I originally set the SSL up for a more specialist ecommerce package.

They offer just about every level of service you could need, more than I will ever want or understand, but the fact you can have a proper conversation with them to get the solution that is right for you is the deal clincher for me.

thanks, once I know this other person is deffo going down the SSL route i'll get in touch with them. I suppose at the moment i'm more after what I need rather than who, if that makes sense. Vidahost sound like a decent company to deal with though

You'll find that a standard "unlimited websites" package will only allow you to use one SSL cert. I had this problem myself last year... The solution was to buy a reseller package. In the end I pay about £180 per year for the hosting but as a developer I host a number of clients' sites so the majority of that bill is recovered.

Check out hostgator or bluehost if that's the route you want to take. Or alternatively send me a message and I may be able to help.

So it is a reseller package I probably need then, and with that I can add an SSL to each account from a third party??

£180 a year isn't bad, £15 a month which at the moment is roughly what we are paying £5 each per month with the new person coming onto the hosting too.

    Thanks

  • Whilst I wouldn't touch Godaddy with a barge pole I would be highly surprised if they are unable to provide what you are requiring.

they can provide multiple SSL trouble is they will all show the primary domain in the seal, which as none of the sites I want SSL for are linked its a non starter. I have been in touch with them to confirm this, you also can not place a third party SSL onto their shared hosting service. Shame really and if i decide we only actually need 1 SSL (other person may decide to sort his own hosting out) then I see no reason to leave them).

@Nuclear PM me with a price please for hosting 1 opencart where I can place an SSL onto it as I could offer that to the other person and that would save me a load of hassle lol
