Sub - can you elaborate more on your comment about CIFAS please? what is it? etc etc. Oh I chose the online option because of convenience and the fact that I am about to make an application to a financial institution who will make a credit search.

I will have a read of Martin's article on credit scoring

Oh yes, btw, why on earth are you paying £9 (!!) to check your credit file online? You know these companies have a legal obligation to send you a printed copy of your credit record for just 2 quid?

Theyare being very crafty marketing all these expensive online services whilst hiding the fact you can pay a fraction of the price for a full printed copy.

Your dead right there, a couple of months ago I ordered a posted copy of my Credit file for £2 online with both Experian and Equifax, they have now withdrawn [Board Guide: this is not true, see links below] this service and you have to post your application to them, but of course you can still get online reports for up to £9 :(

    Yes, and no.

Companies cannot see that you have requested a credit file, but you will the next time you get your record.

Maybe I'm being stupid but I can't understand that answer to the question about 'will companies see that I've requested my credit file and will this affect my credit rating?'. Can anyone clarify?

When you request your own credit history the fact is recorded BUT you are the only one who will be shown this information. A company doing a credit search will not be told about it and therefore it will not affect your credit score.

Im not sure what there was to misunderstand.

Comapnies cannot see it, therefore, how can it affect your score with them?

    They have NOT been withdrawn.

Online applications for statutory credit reports (£2 each):
