Hey all, ive looked everywhere & cannot find the info im after, found this site so hope someone can help.

Ive recently split from my girlfriend & have moved into my own flat. We have an amicable agreement that I have our two kids Sat from 5pm to Tue at 9am.

Ive checked out child/working tax credits & with full time job, no partner & two kids im entitled to alot of money, which I could really do with.

However, as my partner will be claiming too does that mean I cant?

Thanks very much for all input!

Only one person can claim Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit for the same child. You could see if you can come to an agreement with your girlfriend so that you claim for one child and she claims for the other.
    I don't know about WTC.

Though slightly off topic as the focus is on HB, you can get the gist here that it appears to be something to be negotiated, though it wouldn't hurt you to double check if there are any other options open to you

Do you pay any child support?
  • only 1 person can claim CB and WTC/CTC for any children. but if you share custody then you wont have to pay so much towards child support if she has the children more than you which it appears she does. cant remember what the number of overnights you need to have but if you check out the CSA website they have a calculator where you can work out your liability.

Sadly in the sexist government which apparently is "pro equality" the father usually gets the shaft.

For the purpose of child tax credits and child benefit you must be responsible for the child or young person. If an agreement as to who is responsible cannot be decided between you and your ex-partner then a HMRC decision marker will decide. As a general note this is the person who has the child the most. You can apply for the benefits and they will generally freeze the clams whilst they investigate. You have 1 month to appeal a child benefit decision and 30 days to appeal a tax credits decision. You may still be eligible for working tax credits if your income is low enough and you work more than 30 hours per week.
Don't thank me, thank my post :T

the father only "gets the shaft" if he has the child less than the mother. you think the parent with less care should get the more money to look after the child who doesnt spend the majority of time there?

it is exactly the same if the PWC is male. the female NRP isnt eligible to claim.
