Can I claim Benefits for Work Attire?

Hi all

I have a question relating to me needing a suit and a shirt for an interview.

The woman I spoke to at the job centre told me I wouldn't get any help for this and wanted rid of me ASAP.

So, I've applied for a job, if I get an inter Jew I will need a suit, and also if I am lucky enough to begin work there.

I will need to purchase these, but wondered if I could get any assistance with the purchase. The lady looked at me deadpan and said that's what your benefit is for.

But I have all sorts going out, I wouldn't be able to afford anything. I have insurance, travel, food etc to think of.

Does anyone know if I can get assistance with that?

Thank you

  • You can get clothing assistance, more info here.

Go back to the jobcentre and be firm although there is an eligibility criteria.

You don't have to wear a suit, just be smart. That said I would suggest charity shops or supermarkets for clothes at a good price.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Some things in Primark are even cheaper than Charity shops these days.

The Discretionary Fund is very limited nowadays, by all means apply but don't be surprised if you get turned down.

McKneff is right, you can pick up a trousers, shirt and tie for very little nowadays, either from Primark or one of the supermarkets.
  • Primanni is the way to go. JCP are now tighter than ever and in any event would expect you to buy the items yourself with your money and you would have to claim the costs back. Of course, they won't pay you back the full amount on an armani suit....

That is what I was going to say. I get most of my clothes including coats and shoes from charity shops. I can't remember when I last bought a new pair of shoes or in fact any new clothes. Never pay more than £5 for good quality leather shoes, £3 for jacket and trousers and shirts are about 50p.

You have to go regularly for the best bargains. I bought 5 white shirts still in boxes that I have put away for best. They cost £3 for the lot!
Charity shops are also good for Christmas and birthday presents. Then there are those that sell secondhand furniture etc. Got a double bed and mattress for under £10 this summer and that included local delivery!

In our town there are at least 15 charity shops in the High Street.

I think it is a bit of a cheek asking for money from the government to buy new clothes just for an interview or a job. Maybe we should all form a queue and ask for a bit for all of us.
