TalkTalk to SkyTalk Phone Number Issue

Decided to move my broadband and call package to Sky as we already use them for TV. Did everything online via Quidco to get some cash back.
Sky accepted the order on Sunday but on Tuesday advised me by MMS that they were giving me a new phone number. There had been no suggestion of this while I was signing up. We have had this number for over 15 years back in the days when we were with BT.
My wife has told me that she is not happy. I called Sky today and they advised that it was because TalkTalk refused to switch the number. I called TalkTalk and they said they would switch the number on activation day. Were Sky not telling the truth here?
Getting back to Sky they told me I would have to cancel the order and start again if I wanted to keep the number or accept the new one and wait a couple of weeks for my old number to be re-instated. What a complete waste of my time and I fear starting a process that could see me without phone and broadband for a period?
Is the issue here that Sky can't be bothered to liaise with TalkTalk and just find it easier to give out a new number? Why do I have to pay Sky £39 for this "service"?

    Hi SuttonMark,

An ISP (including TalKTalk) should not prevent the number being migrated. It sounds more as if the Sky order was being placed as a new line, rather than a migration of existing service, hence a new number would be issued.

A New line installation also would not automatically cancel the services with TalkTalk. It would be beneficial to check which process (either new install or migration) sky are looking to conduct so we can better understand what actions are necessary.
