kitten jabs, can i get help being on benefits?

Hey, two days ago I took in two kittens 10weeks old, as the previous owner just wanted rid of them not too sure how well they were caring for them tbh. But I'm a single mum on benefits so I'm dreading getting their jabs, the cheapest place I've found its pets at home being £55 per kitten for the course, but this is still too much :( seeing as the kittens were kind of thrust upon me and god knows what would of happened if I hadn't taken them in I don't really have the available funds. Does anyone know of any help I can get with the cost? I'm in Kent if that helps. Thankyou.

If you're claiming Housing Benefit, then you can get free pet care (for a small donation that it) from PDSA & I gather they'll subsidize vaccinations.

    http://www.pdsa.org.uk/pdsa-vet-care/eligibility/
To qualify, pet owners need to:
Live within the defined catchment area of a PDSA PetAid hospital or practice service.
Be receiving either Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit *

    * Please note that only Council Tax Benefit can be accepted. Other reductions in Council Tax e.g. single person discount, second adult rebate and council tax exemption do not qualify.

Please note you will be asked to make a contribution to PDSA for any treatment your pet receives.

Also ask on Purrs & Cat Chat as the are members who are in your area that may know of places that will help you.

As above, and make sure you get them neutered. I think Cats Protection can help out with the costs - as far as I remember, they give you a voucher to take to the vet.

    Enjoy your kitties!

Some places will also chip the cats for free or reduced cost as well.Even tho Miss Daisy's an indoor cat, she's chipped just in case.

Congratulations on becoming a new cat slave first of all :)

AS above, you may be able to get help with vaccinations from PDSA, perhaps also worming and flea treatment.

Are the kittens male or female? You will need to get them neutered/spayed at around 6 months (some vets do it as early as 4 months) to ensure they do not breed among themselves and for other reasons - as you have found out yourself, there is a lot of kittens/cats needing homes already, no need to add to the problem by not neutering the ones that have homes already so please budget for that in advance as can be quite costly - unless again, perhaps you can get help from PDSA.

All the best and... pictures of kities please :)
  • Thankyou for all your replies! I will check out all the links. I will be getting them spayed in a few months dont worry about that lol my mum had a kitten who then had kittens and shes ended up with 7 cats because she couldn't bear to part with them! I'll try and put some pictures up in a sec :)

That's right - the RSPCA chipped one of ours for £5 at some pet event nearby. The vet did the other at a cut price when he speyed her.

Cats Protection has an assisted neutering scheme - whether or not the OP would qualify would depend on their local branch. In my own branch we help the vast majority of people who enquire, although vouchers are sorted out directly with vets (otherwise lots of vouchers are issued but never taken up, which imposes a significant financial risk on the branch).

There is no central CP scheme to assist with vaccinations, although an individual branch could choose to. Most would probably not support this, as finances are better used towards assisting cats who have noone to look out for them.
