Made an offer, yippee....hang on a minute

After being missold PPI on a RBS Visa card I followed the advice on here ( thank you so much) and today I got an offer. Yippee I thought. I was so chuffed at getting some cash back from the bank that I nearly signed the declaration there and then. I never expected to get anything you see. However I was having a glance at their calculations and they have given me ( a goodwill gesture..yeah right) using premiums paid from 2001 to 2011. Now I took the card out in 1993 and have been paying it since then. Proving it would be another thing as they have 'misfiled' the paperwork! Can someone tell me
1) Is there any reason why they should only use these dates?
2) Can they go back further?
3) Should I just accept it and not be greedy

The people on here have not steered me wrong so far, so please any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi there

If you have paperwork in relation to then, I would contact them and ask if you send copies, if they will be prepared to go as far back as that.

To my understanding, if you have copies of the paperwork, they will refund all the way.

Its not the fact of being greedy LOL, :D its your money afterall and no harm in asking.

    Good luck.;)

There is no limit on how far back you can go, but banks will try it on so to speak. You should be able to work out an average payment for the PPI each month from the statements you have and unless your balance went up alot between 93 and 2001 it is reasonable to use this figure to work out a cash figure from 93 onwards. remember in a court case the exact figure don't have to be known-just the figure used have to have a reasonable explanation and logical calculation. If RBS can find the figures they should still make a goodwill gesture for the earlier period.

Have you anything to support when you had the card from old bank statements with direct debit payments on, old odd statements, old credit reports etc?
Even if they have lost the old statements (maybe archived in some way) they should have a date for the account opening surely.

Maybe best bet would be to write back and say you will accept the payment as part settlement for your claim-in relation to the period 2001-2011 but expect a further payment relating to the period from when the card was opened in 93 to the date they state in 2001.

Seen simular on other forums then when pushed the banks suddenly "find" the extra paperwork.

  • Thanks for the reply. Its given me something to think about.
  • Well I refused their offer and went to the Financial Ombudsman. To cut a long story short they came back with an improved offer! This was all thanks to MoneysavingExpert.com and the people in the forums who gave me the advice to fight my case. Cheers to you all
