Hi CIS, although the backdating would be good, I'm more hoping to persuade them to honour the 25% discount as it doesn't seem to be a given that they will let me have it.

I was hoping this might be the case - can anyone else advise?
No chance of me going over the rent a room tax free allowance, think I took a grand total of about £550 last year x

I was told by a council tax member of staff that I could only avoid losing my discount in the following 2 cases:

    1. A full time student with a council tax exemption certificate
    2. A working person for whom my house is not their main residence. The lodger would have to provide a document to prove that they had paid council tax on their main residence.

I currently have a lodger but have lost my single person discount as I can't fulfill the above. I do think that the rent a room scheme should allow for this as the current system works in favour of couples. Single people only get a 25% discount anyway.

They've ignored another half dozen + cases where the discount could still apply.

The fact they are working has no say in the matter nor does paying council tax elsewhere e.g they may have a main residence elsewhere where they aren't the liable party for council tax purposes.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
