Up to 50,000 bottles of mouthwash have been withdrawn from British shelves by Colgate-Palmolive, over fears they may be contaminated with bacteria.
The company announced on Wednesday it was withdrawing its medicinal mouthwash Periogard from sale in 11 of 12 countries in which it is distributed across Europe and Australasia, following a quality defect.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said the recall came after tests found the bacteria Burkholderia in some samples.
Gerald Heddell, from the agency, said: "For healthy people there should be no problems, however, for some there could be a small potential risk of infection."
He said people with a compromised immune system or with chronic lung conditions such as cystic fibrosis were susceptible.
"If people do have any suspected side effects then they should contact their GP," he added.
"Consumers who have purchased Periogard should call our freephone helpline at 00 800 321 321 32 from 8:30am-5pm Monday to Wednesday and Friday, 8:30am-3pm Thursday for instructions on how to return the product and obtain a refund."

Strange as nothing on the colgate website or even the Periogard pages

and no recall notice on

Yes, I agree. I had checked the Colgate website as well to look for any press release but couldn't find any either. It's definitely on the MHRA website though. There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society, where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar: I love not man the less, but Nature more...0
