Then they should of thought of that before getting pregnant, ok there are 'accidents' - but when you don't work - therefore having no wages to buy baby essentials, everything else is pretty much handed to you anyway. So why should 'they' be the only ones to receive this maternity grant?
I think people are missing the point here, the OP hasn't started this thread to start a debate - she is trying to make people aware & to get people to sign the petition in support of ALL mothers getting the maternity grant. TBH, I can't see why even someone who is entitiled to it wouldn't sign the petition ??
As I have read so many times in these threads from other posters, 'if you don't like it with it, simple - don't read any further or comment on it'...

It is paid to anyone with an income of up to £25k-ish, regardless of if this money comes from wages or benefits.
There are big moves to take children out of poverty and grants like this help low income families buy the essentials you need with a baby.I think people are missing the point here, the OP hasn't started this thread to start a debate - she is trying to make people aware & to get people to sign the petition in support of ALL mothers getting the maternity grant. I won't sign it as I don't think it should be paid to all mothers. It's a means tested benefit to help people in need. Do high income families really need £500 for baby things? Where is the extra money going to come from to pay for this? A rise in taxes, or by cutting other benefits?
I'm also against high income families getting child benefit. I recall one millionaire lady scoffing it on TV saying it was a waste of time as the money didn't even cover what she spends on face cream in a week. To other families, the child benefit is what provides food on the table. Quite a contrast, and I would say the face cream mother has no need for £500 if she were to have another baby.As I have read so many times in these threads from other posters, 'if you don't like it with it, simple - don't read any further or comment on it'...

why would you say this to another poster to whom you have just posted a reply saying how much you dissagree ? is it just you who is allowed an opinion then ?
if the op is going to post on a discussion board then they should expect people to post opinions both in favour and in dissagrement.0 -

1) you might be entitled to it once the baby is born and
2) you dont *need* a £1000!!! i have two babies under 2 and i know how much you need...0 -

We earn less than that and are not entiltled to the Sure start grant.
As people have said maybe when I'm on leave I will be or maybe not.
Apply after the baby is born, you will most likely get it, the, you just need 50p above the minium amount with the baby element and you will get it.
And babies dont need everything barnd new, its the parents that 'need' brand new. Dd1 had nothing brand new, all was given to her. Altogether i have prob sepent about £350 on things for both of them (the essenitals) clothes i bought from ebay cheap.0 -
india wrote:I don't really think that's any of your business and you don't know that I didn't consider that when deciding to have a baby. All I asked was for people to look at the petition and sign it if they agree I didn't ask for your personal opinion.
I can afford my baby. I just personally think that the government concentrate and spend the majority of there money on single mothers whether that's right or wrong it is not for me to say. I also think that the sure start being offered to everyone wouldn't make anyone worst off.
Working for social services I have seen how lack of money can effect families and when I said this I wasn't talking about myself.
Ok first of all, if you don't think your situation is any of my business then fine, but i don't understand why you'd post about your business on a message board then retaliate in this manner when I post a reply
Secondly, in your original post you state how expensive babies are and that you are creating a petition to get the government to pay everyone £500 per child based on the fact that babies are expensive - so I'm not sure exactly what you mean here either
as I say, before getting pregnant these things need to be taken into consideration surely, rather than getting pregnant and then complaining because you are not entitled... 0 -

I totally agree but also think people who dont work shouldnt just get handed cash for a baby as like someone else said nothing to stop them sitting back having baby after baby after baby knowing they will get handed so much cash.
We seriously thought about if we could afford a baby before trying for DS, and tried for 3 years for this baby and altho its a much wanted baby we are being very practical in getting the few bits we dont have left over from DS from Freecycle or looking out for sales or bargains on the net instead of thinking 'we have X amount of cash coming from the gov so we will waste what cash we do have on this that or the next thing and rely on that cash coming in for the baby'.
I dont know for sure but i dont think we will get the maternity grant.Bringing up 2 handsome boys and 1 gorgeous girl the MSE way!Joseph born 19th December 2001Matthew born 8th August 2007Tara born 23rd January 20110
