'morning folks.
had a wee saga with the old banger's windscreen last week.....
big crack appeared....[over Xmas,a s it happens...]...not worried or concerned about it....the screen wouldn't 'cave-in' suddenly......but its an embeggerance!
Especially as MoT is due next month!
Did consider popping to local scrappy, extracting a screen, coughing up a tenner or so and fitting it myself! [It is not a glue-in type]..
Then remembered my insurance policy...I don't have claims made against me [my professional skills mean I can guarantee that, absolutely...no, not arrogant, I simply 'practice what I preach']...] so it's about time I recovered some of that excessive premium money my insurer has profited from...[the ridiculous computerised job selection thingy doesn't remotely cover what I do for a living!!]
Excess for windscreens is £50 for me.....so...weighed it up....and decided not to expend my precious spare time, energy, etc..and allow Autoglass to do it instead!
They even come to my place-of-work to do it too....
Well, they sent a relatively new guy [I wasn't present....one of the managers over-saw the process]...who obviously had really only been brought-up on glued-in windscreens.... apparently he got the new screen in, then promptly cracked it!
I got a phone call, very apologetic, humble, etc....but I didn't fuss about it all.....my only concern was, could I still use the car to get home that night?
The guy was indeed very grateful I hadn't made the usual song-and-dance that customers apparently make when things go awry......sh#t happens, is my view....
New glass booked for next day....but Autoglass decided to send a more 'experienced' screen fitter instead...so job done nicely, thank you very much.
Nice clean screen now....saves washing it, I suppose?
Well, the experiences last week came to the fore for me when I read an article on BBC about the storage of knowledge and information......people seems to have less 'experience' of the commonplace skills these days than of old...simply because, they don't need it!
Folk rely on things......take Sat-Nav, for example? Folk follow it blindly..and when they get led up the creek, they don't 'blame' themselves and their ignorance, they blame the sat-nav company for not updating quickly enough.
Give them a road map, and they haven't a clue!
Today, people don't need to 'learn', I feel...if they 'need' to know something, they Google it...once that information is acquired and used, it can be forgotten....because it will always be there in the future, easily accessible.
At work, I no longer expect my students to 'learn' facts and other information.....I'm 'not allowed' to make them learn any more.
All they have to do, is tell me 'where they can find that information!'
Which is all well and good, but what if.......?
Another annoyance of mine...the appalling lack of spelling and grammar skills I see these days...especially on the 'net?
I'm not perfect by any means...but when people type what they actually think they're saying, that takes the biscuit in my view...
In particular, the use of the word 'of' instead of 'have?'
Yet schools, universities, colleges etc actually accept that sort of thing....!
Maybe us oldies are trying to do a King Canute....trying to hold back the tide of ignorance which is washing over the world? No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
