Benefit Overpayment- Told various things

Okay were do I start?
In November 2009 I was pregnant with my first little boy, my partner was claiming Income support(as we had both been in further education) for both of us, he claimed this up until April 2010(my son was born in february) In April 2010, we was told the claim should of been changed into my name in November(as I was past my 29th week in pregnancy) we had told them we hadnt realised and was worried about the overpayment, to which the DWP said we could have the new claim in my name backdated to cover it. When it came to it they wouldnt backdate it!
After speaking to ANOTHER person at DWP we was told because we had been given false information(about getting it backdated) that it would be fine and their was no need to appeal... So of course we thought everything would be fine, my partner was going through alot of hospital trips due to having being diagnosed with AS, and we was planning our wedding, so with us thinking it was sorted slipped to the back of our minds.
A YEAR later, we got a letter stating we had to pay it back.. Over £1700, I rang again.. and was told we HAD to pay it and a late appeal wouldnt work.
Now we are having to pay back £20.70 a week! Until 2014, which we can NOT afford with two children, even with my husband working! And as we would of been claiming the same amount of benefit regardless of whos name it was in, I don't really know what we can do.
Any ideas? Help? They are crippling us.
