richt71 wrote:Elance.com is a place like ebay but for web design people amongst other tech type people. You post what you want...how much you'll pay. Then they'll bid to design a website. They are rated by previous customers and usually provide a sample of work. You can ask questions of any of the web design bidders. You usually pay 50% upfront and the rest when you're happy.
In terms of taking payments I'd suggest paypal to begin with as it's free and easy to set-up. If you start doing well it may be cheaper at that time to swap to a pay per month merchant account provider where the costs per transactions are cheaper. Hope that helps?
Excellent idea re; PayPal, didn't give tha a thought! head is full of info and total internet confusion!
i'm really good at internet shopping, it just gets really confusing when you decide you want to sell!

I use these people http://www.nsdesign.co.uk/ for two different webbys I have. £116.50 to register a domain and host for a year.
The best thing is their support service though Its second to non, if you click that link you see a instant messenger thing where they deal with any problems virtually straight away, and I was bothering them all day Sunday and was getting replies all day too. Cant fault them. Someone off here recommended them to me and I'm very glad they did too.0 -
Some excellent info in this thread, looking into setting up a site myself.
One thing that concerns me (maybe I'm being paranoid !) is the need to list your address when registering a domain name. This info seems to available to anyone searching for domains. Is this something that can be hidden ?
I checked a few domains a friend has and sure enough all his detail are there for the world to see.
Maybe it's just me but I'd rather not have my home address traceable.

Right..... So i'm guessing, this is what i have to do..
1. Domain name purchased
2. Build my own website ( am going with the 123reg Pro instant site)
3. Domain hosting ( with someone other that 123reg)
4. Search engine optimisation~ this is where it gets all foggy again... am thinking of the Pay per click... do you think this is my best option?
i promise i'll go away soon :-)
mollymoo x who really hasn't got a clue!
ooh, and the holding page thingy... is that before or after no.3?!
sorry............ x0 -

No worries. Paypal is what I used on my website I sold recently before moving onto one of the pay month ones which can cost loads a month but if you do loads it's cheaper than paypal.
You can get a web designer on elance.com to intrigrate paypal into your webpage. I recently had a webpage selling an item with paypal on it and a thank you page. It cost me £100 from elance.com0 -

I'd recommend godaddy.com for hosting - $39.99 (£20) a year for a good basic package and the ability to upgrade if you have loads of customers. I use godaddy for about 12 website hostings.
Pay per click (adwords) is a quick good way to go but be aware that you need to be on the first page of google to get clicks but this may be very costly depending on what key words/phrases you bid on.
I found a good guy on ebay that summits your sites to google/yahoo for £3.50 with many people getting 1st page listing on google. Pm me if you want his details.
Don't need a holding page unless it's going to be ages until you build your webpages.0 -

As a punter most people would prefere that a companies home adress IS traceable, I have got a number of jobs because I am quite open about my details people like honesty in the minefield of business.0 -

You can make your info private. Most domain registering companies will do this for you at a small charge - usually £3-£10 a year extra. It will just refer people to who your domain is registered with but not release any personal info.0
