Car insurance question

Morning all!
Im a little bit unsure what to do here, but wanted to ask here before I go any further.
Both my partner and I used to own our own cars, and were accruing our own NCD (her 2 years, myself 15).
Due to financial reasons we sold our cars and purchased a single family car which is registered in my name. We both drive the car as much as each other, so there is no way to say who the 'main' driver is.
This past year, I was the main driver on our insurance policy, and she was the named driver. I have earned another years NCD (upto maximum already).
In order for her not to lose her 2 years NCD we would like to take the policy out this year with her as the main driver, and myself as the named driver. Whilst keeping myself as the registered keeper.
Is this legal/allowable?
If not, are there any insurers that allow us to keep and earn seperate NCD and subsequently transfer these to other insurers?
In the future we may have to get a second car.
Thanks for any help

Can you clarify on partner please. I hate the term as it's too ambiguous for example:
Business partner
wife
girlfriend
If she's your wife there's no problems with swapping for the NCD. I'm not sure if you can do the same with a girlfriend though but with it being a 'family car' i'm taking it that you live together?
So if she's your wife there's no problem at all and loads of people do it but somebody will be along shortly to confirm if you can do it with the girlfriend if you live together without it being classed as fronting.0 -
Partner as in fiance.
We have lived together for 5 years and have two children.
She drives the car on the school in the morning, and me on the evening school run.
Weekend driving is shared as she gets the hump if I drive too much! :rotfl:
Our finances are also interwoven with joint accounts etc.0 -
Direct line used to let a named driver build up NCD, thats how i built mine up. Its worth checking to see whether they still do this.

I'm not 100% sure but a fiance may be fine..0

Just to be pedantic... it is the policy holder that normally acrues the NCD, the policy holder may be the main driver too, but they can be the named driver and the other person can be the main driver.
So, unless the insurer allows both the policy holder and a named driver to acrue their own NCD, then your fiance would need to take over the insurance policy for a couple of years and then swap it back to you in a further two years time.
Make sure this particular insurer recognises your NCD after two years without a policy. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Yes BAA1, I am currently the policyholder and the main driver.
With regards to the 2 year NCD thing. Her policy finished at 11.59 on 02/11/10 and I took the policy from 00.01 on 03/11/10.
Due to her points from 2008, I will probably be the policyholder/main driver for 2011/12.
Would her NCD still be valid for a policy that started at 00.01 on 03/11/12?
Thanks for all the help :T0 -
most places only let you keep it for two years although a few let you keep hold of them for three years.0
