If you have a branch of Poundstretcher/Instore near to you they have some sewing machines on offer that might be worth a look.
They have one for £25 that might suit your needs.
Details on their website here :

I looked at that 1 on friday & it looks good for the money, I would like to take up basic sewing again & thought I would like a small basic machine, JL had them for £57:eek::eek::eek::eek: in lots of colours, & to be honest the POUNDSTRETCHER machine looked good & value for money.
At the end of the day its all about price & value not how the thing l looks.
I am going to buy the cheaper 1 this week.0 -

TBH if you look around charity shops and junk shops there are dozens of older sewing machines going for a song that are x50 better quality than a cheapie modern one. That old straight stitch Singer in your Granny's attic may date from 1920 but it's quality engineering, built to last and will cope with a far wider variety of fabrics and give you a better stitch quality than a cheap flimsy plastic value one. I can honestly say that very few basic modern machines will stitch three or more layers of jeans fabric without a struggle, an old singer will just whizz through it. So for anyone on a tight budget, don't dismiss older machines.
I've got one modern sewing machine that cost me £400 four years ago btw, and I never use it. I've got a 1974 Jones, a 1932 Singer treadle and my latest machine is the best, a 1958 Singer 320K that I bought for £10 out a charity shop last month. It does 320 embroidery stitches, can sew literally anything and would have cost the equivilent of three months wages back then. It was made for the seamstress or keen hobby sewer marker and is quite possibly the highest quality machine ever made for the domestic market. And it was in perfect working condition, just needed a new needle and some oil. Did I mention it only cost £10? Now that's a bargain...!
Go look in your relatives' attics is my advice, and don't disdain an older machine.Val.0 -
I used to have a basic Singer sewing machine that I had had for 20+ years, finally collapsed after I made two prom dresses with it over a couple of weeks! I now have a basic sewing machine from Lidl and find it does everything I need it to do. Never use it for anything like embroidery, might have to replace the odd zip and make up dresses etc, but there really is no need for anything other than variable stitch length, straight and zig-zag, zip function, and a buttonholer. I had a friend that spent hundreds on a sewing machine "because it had more on it than the others". It is so complicated to use it spends it's time sitting on a table rather forlornly! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

I`ve not used mine yet, i`ve unpicked the tape from the curtains and tomorrow i`m hoping to cut them down to size. I`ll probably be doing the sewing on Wednesday so i`ll report back then.
It does look like a good decent fairly solid machine though.
I`m not sure how long the offer is on at Argos so i grabbed mine whilst they were in stock. If its rubbish i`ll return it but tbh it looks like it was a good buy.

I wonder if the offer for the sewing machine will come on again for £39.99? Anyone in the know?
I am watching a Beldray 12 stitch one on ebay, anybody know if they are any good?0 -
OOh I'd forgotten all about this thread, Murphy - i hope that the machine does come on offer for you again.
I`ve used mine several times now since i bought it, not for anything complicated just altering curtains and making dog bed covers to stuff duvets inside and i`m pleased to say that it has been brilliant.
It has already paid for itself with the money saved from buying ready made dog beds which are stupidly expensive.

Yea I had got one of the Argos ones and it lasted only a few weeks then broke something internally. Though it was fantastic for mending and making things, there were none in stock at the time so changed it for something else
watching like a hawk for them on offer again now lol

i sew a lot, making my friends wedding dress at the moment, I have a reliable brother that I bought about 10 years ago that has not failed me yet, but spotted an old singer sewing machine (the one in a table) for £20 on gumtree, it is now sitting in the corner of the kitchen, I haven't had my brother out since as it lurks in my broom cupboard and I have to unpack it from its box to use it... now that's lazy.0
