Tell mum now that you will be claiming CB if lil' sis is still living with you by a set date (next week). I suspect that will concentrate her mind on the consequences of her actions. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
we are going for a 2 week timescale, in 2 weeks time if Mum wont have her back we are going to sort everything this end.
bc will take 10 days
so little i can do without it hence 2 weeks seems fair, giving both sides the needed time.
Today its still a no from Mum to her going home, hence ive suggested 2 weeks.Debt free

This probably won't help just now (if birth certificate already ordered) but as there's already a Child Benefit claim in place for your sister you shouldn't need her birth certificate to have this transferred over to you. There may at some point be some questions about where she actually lives if your mum disputes that she's moved out but that's for another day as doesn't yet seem to be the case.
AFAIK Child Benefit applications are taking around 12 weeks to be processed when there's no complications so I'd recommend that you make your competing claim as soon as possible.
If you find yourself really stuck it might be worth contacting social services to see if there's any financial assistance they can give you while you're getting this all sorted out.
Good luck.

As your sister is now living with you, what was the excuse your mother gave for not giving you the CB and CTC? It will be a set amount each week, so she'll know how much it is. All she has to do is hand it over to you. The clue is the the name, child benefit and child tax credits, and she no longer has a child living with her!!!0

Is your sister getting EMA? If so that could be used to help pay for travel etc until you sort out what's going to happen in the longtermThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

EMA stopped this year.
OP, please don't encourage her to change schools in the middle of A levels, particularly if she's doing well. Her future is important and you should be able to afford the fares when you get the benefits sorted out.0 -
Yes
You can claim CB for any child who is living with you. Once you do that add her to your CTC claim.
You do not need to order the BC on-line unless you have to; it is much cheaper to go to the Registry Office where the birth was registered and get a duplicate. Cost £7-9 depending whether they count it a an archive service.
Ring the likely office, confirm that they have the register there and see if little sister can go and collect it?
Oh and once you have the CB, claim CSA off mum (just to wind her up).
Just a little point, but it's not much more expensive online - it cost me £9.95 for mine and came pretty quickly.
I agree about getting the claims in asap, as they'll start from when you apply not when she moved in with you (afaik). You can always cancel the claim once it's in.
Good luck with it all.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
i couldnt help but respond, as i found myself in exactly this situation. all told i raised my sister from 14-17. tax cred and CB are easy to sort, but they did want my sisters birth cert. that said, they put the changes in motion and simply awaited the birth cert to finalise things.
good luck to you and your family. it would be lovely to sort things out for your sis with your mum, especially financially, but at the end of the day you know you are entitled to the money and your mum simply isnt if she is not raising your sister.0 -
Make sure you claim child maintenence from her mother and her father - contact the CSA if you can't come to a private arrangement. The maintenence will not affect any benefits you get.0
