Frickin gas board

Had a guy knock my door this morning asking if I us gas at all in my flat, which I do but only the cooker top and oven, anyways he said there was a small leak in the building but it was nothing to worry about, a couple hours later I get a card through the door saing that the gas will be switched off tomorrow morning from 9am and to ring the number on the card to sort out cooking arrangments, kept ringing the number but couldn't get through. Two blokes knock my door 20 minutes ago to give me a russell hobbs electric 2 ring cooker thingy and inform me that the gas is going off for good !!!!!!, and someone will be in touch with me about my cooker. So from 2moro morning I have no grill and no oven and just two piddly hobs to cook on, I don't even have a toaster. What the hell am I supposed to cook for my two year old until this is sorted? The majority of stuff I cook is ovened or grilled as I hate fried food. Also is it down to them to buy or supply me with a new electric cooker?

So what is going on with the gas? Are the gas people saying there will never be any more gas, or is this just a short term thing?

You can cook lots of stuff on the hob. boil? steam? stir fry?

I assume that the company(Transco?) have found that the gas leak in the building has made it unsafe to supply gas.

If that is the case it is the owner of the building (or the flat where the leak is) who is responsible for getting it fixed; not the gas 'Board'.

I would have thought that providing a small cooker was a 'goodwill gesture' by the gas company, rather than their responsibility.
  • microwave ?

get a sandwich toaster.. yum !
  • All been sorted now, I live in a council owned tower block and the building is split up into three sections so it has only affected about 7 homes on my side of the building so they've decided rather than paying thousands to sort thr problem they are plumpng for the cheaper alternatve which is to buy new electric cookers for those who are affected. I wasn't really bothered about cooking for myself but I have a two year old son and will not feed him fried or microwaved foods, cooker will be comng next week so looks like I'm off to my mums for the week to be fed.

Will they be covering the additional running costs of an electric cooker over your gas one?

We lived in a 15 story tower-block that had gas under-floor heating and you could have gas cookers, however many many years back without choice due to safety gas was no longer being supplied into the block, there were still some gas meters left in people flats, but obviously of no use. The flats all had storage heaters installed and vouchers given to those on benefits or low wages to buy replacement electric cookers. People switched to economy 7.

Although the storage heaters were pretty modern, like all storage heaters they were pretty well expensive to run, but people were used to high bills as the gas under-floor heating was very costly to run too, so in that instance there was little difference.
