Car Insurance Admin Fee

I've just been a good boy and called my car insurance company to tell them of my first ever 3 points on the driving licence. They thanked me for the information and then informed me that there was a £14.50 admin fee to note the details on my policy!

My debate with them went along the lines of "I'm notifying you because you say I have to - I don't want it noted on my policy so I won't pay the fee. I've fulfilled my obligations so whatever you do with the information is up to you - just don't expect to me to pay for it."

Eventually their agent agreed to waive the fee.

|Has this happened to anyone ele - is it common practice?

(p.s. I'm glad that I got them to turn a blind eye to the fee - gives you a clue as to who they were.)

  • It tends to be the cheapy range that do this - I suppose they have to earn some money from some where.

This is common practice and many insurers charge btwn £5.00 to £25.00.

Now as far as I am aware the FSA state the insurane companies must state clear the charges that may apply to your account. For example I am with AA and they provide a breakdown of all charges that could apply should I make any changes.
