    Dear <insert name>

    I refer to your recent correspondence regarding a debt of <insert amount> registered on my credit report. I do not recognise this debt and I strongly resent the implication of your unwarranted intrusion into my affairs. I am not obliged to prove any particulars to you and in fact it is incumbent upon you to prove the debt belongs to me. Since you have stated that the address you have on file does not match my address, then I would say that this is strong evidence that your records are incorrect and that you have the wrong person. Please remove the default from my credit report immediately or I will be forced to make an official complaint to the Office of Fair Trading, with whose regulations you are obliged to comply. If however, you dispute the facts of this case and are convinced that this debt belongs to me, you will of course be able to provide satisfactory evidence to that effect which will comply with current guidlines. This will of course include a credit agreement bearing my signature or some other such evidence. Until that time, I deem your communication to be tantamount to harrassment and you will cease this activity immediately.

    Kind Regards

    <a !!!!ed off innocent person>

    Something like that should do the trick.

    Mupette - the op doesn't even know what this debt is. Arrow have bought some account from someone, slapped a default on the OP's credit file and then refused to explain themselves. If the OP just pays it off, it encourages this sort of behaviour and you or I might be next.
  • Re the mortgage...don't lose hope with that, depending how old the default is (IF it's yours), you may still get offered a mortgage at a decent rate.

    I had a default on my file which was 5 1/2 yrs old when I applied for my mortgage last yr and I was offered and am now on a 5 yr fixed with a 4.something apr rate. I can't remember the specific rate without looking through my filing cabinet!

    I must say however, that this was the ONLY inadvertent thing on my report and everything else was spot on...I also had a notice of correction on there because although I was liable for said debt, I believed my ex to be paying for it and he wasn't - he also kept all letters and contact from the company from me. As soon as I found out about the default I paid in full and at similar time split up with ex!!!

    Obviously if it isn't yours, then the above advice should sort it out.
  • thanks for the help guys.means a lot all the response. good to see people out there who care. i will send that letter of and see what they say. the rest of my credit report is uptodate i.e no other defaults and all old loans and credit cards payed and up to date etc so worst case i go for the morgage with it on. as its only £300 its really annoying you cant do anything about it . i could try a pay to delete letter if this one fails , but i would have to make sure i do not admit whatsoever to the debt. if they get their money im sure they don't mind doing that ? or would they?

    oh and if it is your debt, they will agree to remove the default if you pay up. They did with me. (though only paid half as orange admitted liability for the other half)

  • hi curr946 what is that number as its not regonised? is it the number for arrow gloabl? did you get it in proof of writing that they would remove defualt before you paid them? how long after you payed them did they delete it? thanks in advance
  • Not sure I understand all this!

    If it is your debt why not just pay it and get it over with? If you cant afford to pay £300 not sure getting a mortgage is sensible?

    Even if the DCA cant prove the debt there is no obligation for them to remove the default.
