Parts will probably be around £75 if front pads only. Labour about an hour and a half, say £50 per hour. So roughly £150.
  • For a polo i would expect to be charged as below:

    labour
    parts
    Change brake pads
    £20
    £30
    change the air filter
    £0
    5
    new fan belt
    £20
    5
    change oil and filter
    £20
    15
    change spark plugs
    £20
    5

I think that makes £140 with a receipt, without i think closer to £100. But this depends on a number of things, e.g. the quality of the parts, whether his served it in a workshop or on his drive and his profit required.

    Thanks for that guys!

He did it at his garage, but when O/H asked him for a receipt he said he didn't do them:confused: I'm gonna ask my friend's husband to get one off him so we have proof that the work has been done :)

He charged us £150 (that was said to be a discounted price 'cos we were sent in by his friend) ... so I guess that is fair and we didn't get ripped off! Will never go to a friend of a friend again though:o - all seemed a bit too dodgy to me!!!

Now, does anyone know what the average cost of an engine re-tuning should cost:D The engine keeps cutting out and we were told it needs to be re-tuned!

    Thanks heaps again guys :)

I'd be happy paying £150 for that yes.

I'm a little concerned about you saying

"(oil tank thingy hasn't been cleaned out)"

What do you mean by this? Cars don't have oil tanks.

:rotfl: :rotfl: That just means I know nothing about cars :o

When clearing out the bit that holds the oil ... do you just change the oil and oil filter and not the container (I thought it was a sort of tank!) it is contained in

lol, no you put the oil directly into the engine. When you change it, there is a drain plug in the bottom of the engine that you take out, and it falls out, and then you put it back in and take one off the top and put the new stuff in. :rotfl:

You can use "engine flush" which can flush out the remaining old oil better, but some people like these, some don't. Personally, I just make sure I leave the old oil draining for half an hour to make sure I get as much as possible out.
