I understand a parent can claim CB for persons over 18 (beggars belief) but are there college courses that dont count if a child is at college only Im sure i read it somewhere, also the young Adult (as I will refer based on being 18) has to attend hospital twice weekly for an afternoon due to eating disorder, a certain payment is paid fortnightly of around 90 pound so what would this be and would CB still be claimable? based on mental health issues...
any more info required please ask, just trying to establish some facts thats all as dont seem to get anywhere on the .gov site or when on phone as obviously all cases not identical

Yes ChB (child benefit) may be claimed until the young person is 20 providing the young person is in full time non-advanced education or approved, unwaged training. I.e. more than 12 hours a week at school or college. The person responsible for the young person may also be able to claim CTC (child tax credits) and or WTC (working tax credits).
There is no benefit for eating disorders, however, the claimant may be receiving DLA (disability living allowance) (and) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) though it is difficult to say. Note that if the young person is receiving DLA then you may be entitled to more CTC due to a disability element being added. Note also that if the young person is claiming ESA then you cannot get ChB/CTC for them.Don't thank me, thank my post :T

The fortnightly payment might be ESA, but then again they wouldn't get this if CB was in payment. Might be DLA?I understand a parent can claim CB for persons over 18 (beggars belief) but are there college courses that dont count if a child is at college only Im sure i read it somewhere, also the young Adult (as I will refer based on being 18) has to attend hospital twice weekly for an afternoon due to eating disorder, a certain payment is paid fortnightly of around 90 pound so what would this be and would CB still be claimable? based on mental health issues...

Courses that don't count for Child Benefit
You can't get Child Benefit if your child is doing an 'advanced' education course. Examples of advanced education courses include:- a degree
- Diploma of Higher Education (DHE)
- NVQ level 4 or above
- BTEC Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND)
- teacher training
I made a mistake once, believeing people on the internet were my virtual friends. It won't be a mistake that I make again!0 -
