First Great Western weekend train tickets offer
Options
First Great Western are doing an offer with up to two adult day return tickets anywhere on their network for £10 (standard)/£20 (first) each and up to four children at half those prices to anywhere on their network, for season ticket holders. Using FGW trains between FGW stations only, must be used on weekends from 27 Jan to 18 Mar, only one offer per season ticket holder:

(Ts&Cs on page 1 of the leaflet)
Note that it doesn't specify the season ticket has to be from a FGW station, just that it's for a minimum of a month. The cheapest monthly season is Ryde Esplanade to Ryde St John's Road (on the Isle of Wight) for £11.20. So it might be cheaper for some people even if they have to buy one of these anyway. Take along a passport photo when buying the season.
So, for example, normal (saver) return Cardiff-London £54. Day return splitting tickets at Swindon and Didcot total £39.40. This offer including Ryde monthly season £21.20.

You can get a monthly season from Dockyard to Devonport for 8.90. That is a FGW season too, so that eliminates any problem there.
This deal can apparently only be done once. However, enforcement of that is doubtful. London Paddington to Penzanze on Saturday, back on Sunday for 28.90! (just don't use the return portion of the offer).0
