What's the job situation like in your area, is it really as dire as it's made out?

I work in Chester. MBNA employ 4,000 people here. MBNA are pulling out of European credit card business (or something along those lines). Could be grim if a buyer doesnt take over - however, I have heard lots of firms in the next 5 years will be moving into Cheshire Oaks business park.0

I am employed but off longterm sick and looking for what I can do in the future. I will need to retrain.
I see lots of posts/media reports/etc telling us there are jobs out there for everyone.
Are there?
In my area going by the two most common methods of advertising jobs, the local newspaper and the job centre website last week my newspaper had 7 job vacancies of which only one was not a technical/have to have specific quals for, and on my jobseekers direct search today there are 3 new vacancies, all three have to have specific qualifications too.
It's making me rather depressed that the kind of positions I could do in the future just don't seem to crop up often and I am realising that I am likely to face a period of unemployment when I am fit and well again.
Out of interest what is the situation like in your own area?
There are hundreds of jobs here.
Although many have to have qualifications/experience there are still hundreds.
Yet my friend who moved from here to Liverpool has applied for 56 and can not get a job at all. poor thing..0 -

Well, I've been looking for jobs in Edinburgh and Lothians for quite some time. First I have been specific but now I would take anything but just get constant 'No'. I'm so fed up and stressed and have no idea what to do.
Exactly the same boat here - applying all over Fife and Edinburgh. It's a fine line between feeling I'm applying for enough positions but also spending enough time on each application. It's only been a couple of months for me though so luckily I'm not totally in the doldrums yet - but it is getting demotivating.February Grocery Challenge - £100.87/£180February Don't Throw Food Away Challenge - £0.60/£1.500 -
Near Gt Yarmouth Norfolk....
I moved away aged 19-23 and lived in Lincoln. When I was a kid I found it easy to walk into a seasonal job but finding a winter job was harder but I found one.
Moved back in 2008, couldn't even get a seasonal job!!! Found a job eventually with the Jobcentre.
Left in May and since then it has been terrible, I have had a few interviews.
It looks a little better in Norwich but would need a higher salary as it will cost me about an extra £100 a month to commute.0 -
Things are grim in the West of Scotland too. I am working in a fixed term contract position and have recently had my contract extended till 2014, but the pay is low and I'd like to find something permanent and a bit more taxing. I've been applying but not had a sniff of an interview for ages now. I'm only a couple of years shy of 50 which probably doesn't help but it is quite demoralising when it appears a wealth of experience counts for nothing. It's putting me off spending several hours filling out application forms when half the time the employers don't even take 5 minutes to say thanks but no thanks.
At least I'm working, and for that I'm grateful...things could be a lot worse.0 -
There seem to be no full time jobs going. I am qualified, experienced, educated and have a range of exemplary references including from a CEO, however I lowered my sights and have been going for retail and other minimum wage jobs....had multiple rejections from companies such as Asda, Boots and McDonalds. I am working part time for a big retailer but it's under the 16 hours a week required for tax credits and my claim for JSA was declined too so I am trying to survive on under £50 a week for EVERYTHING. It's shocking.0

That's also a lot of the problem, there are jobs out there but there are employers are being far too demanding in what they want.
There may be a lot of jobs being advertised but also at very low salaries and while we realise that we may have to accept a lower salary than what we had before - is an (as an example) experienced PA going to apply for a full time PA role with a salary of £11000 pa?0
