I am employed but off longterm sick and looking for what I can do in the future. I will need to retrain.

I see lots of posts/media reports/etc telling us there are jobs out there for everyone.

    Are there?

In my area going by the two most common methods of advertising jobs, the local newspaper and the job centre website last week my newspaper had 7 job vacancies of which only one was not a technical/have to have specific quals for, and on my jobseekers direct search today there are 3 new vacancies, all three have to have specific qualifications too.

Oh dear, you're one of THOSE. Ever thought about knocking on the door of every single business in your town to see if they want someone, regardless of whether they're advertising vacancies or not? Didn't think so...

I work in IT in the south and get calls every day from agents looking to fill positions, despite not actively looking for two years. At work we're struggling to get people in through the door fast enough. I guess, however, these all count as "technical/have to have specific quals for" jobs..

    How downright bloody RUDE.

How do you know I won't be doing all those things? And did you miss the part where I said I am actually in employment by the way??

Ignore Hammyman - they're just the local troll, posting drivel to get their kicks.

It's not much better here. I got chewed up and spat out by the advisor at the job Centre because I told them that the number 11 bus didn't go to one of the "local" jobs that they had advertised on that keypad thingy. It was in Oxford  and I'm in South Yorkshire. I still think that my opinion was justified :rotfl:
The advisor thought that I was being difficult because I wasn't willing to travel that far.
Seriously though, a Poundstretchers store opened up recently and for the 12 jobs going, 700 people applied, it's a bit thin on the ground atm. Usually there are lots of shops around here advertising for Christmas help, but I've only seen one wanting people so far, and that was for Iceland.
It's an employers market, and they are being rather picky atm.
BEST EVER WINS WON IN ORDER (so far) = Sony Camcorder, 32" lcd telly, micro ipod hifi, Ipod Nano, Playstation 3, Andrex Jackpup, Holiday to USA, nintendo wii, Liverpool vs Everton tickets, £250 Reward Your thirst, £500 Pepsi, p&o rotterdam trip, perfume hamper, Dr Who stamp set, steam cleaner.

comping = nowt more thrillin' than winnin':T :j

Just checked my local paper, in the online jobs section, and there are 2044 jobs within 30 miles of my town (Wiltshire). Guess if you're looking for something specific it might be quite hard, but there are plenty of MW jobs out there if you just need to pay the bills.

Have you tried the online scrapers like 'Jobsite' as opposed to the local Job Centre

    http://www.jobsite.co.uk/

An open (all postitions) search for "Barnsley" returned over 2400 results / listings. Okay they all probably wont all be on your doorstep, but i'm sure that basic search criteria will bring results which are closer than Oxford ;)
