Problems shutting down and starting up.

I've got a computer with Windows XP on it. About two weeks ago it developed two problems:
1. I have to request it to shut down twice. The first time I make the request nothing happens. The second time it closes down properly.
2. When I start it up I get the message "We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully". I have to catch this message before it tries starting up on the new configuration again and select for it to start using the last known good configuration. Then it starts OK. But it's a bit of a hassle.
I didn't make any changes to my computer on the day I first started noticing these problems. I've tried restoring my system to points before the problems started (takes up to three hours to do) but there's no improvement.
I've googled the problems and it seems other people have had similar issues, but most of the search results are quite old and I haven't found anything that has fixed it. Is there anything anyone here can suggest that I can do that may fix it? Or should I just live with it?

Thanks. Uninstalling rapport fixed the startup problem and disabling the items listed in point 12 of the speedup sticky thread fixed the shutdown problem.
I do use citrix actually. http://www.prospreads.com/ requires it to run their platform. It does seem a bit unsophisticated of them though. Is that fair?0
