bitconfused - I have recently applied and been successful in receiving DLA for my DS who is still in process of ASd diagnosis, the fact remains that whether the child has ASD or not they do require significant extra care and that is why DLA is paid. I know of a few children with a diagnosis but whose care needs are not significant and they are not able to receive DLA.

If she pays voluntary maintenance in the form of full mortgage payments, I would think the DWP would not consider her maintenance as an income, so therefore isn't the mortgage issue well....not an issue? Good on her for offering to do this I must add!
As for benefits of a parent of a disabled child, once you're successful in proving that he has a disability you will certainly be entitled to enough to live on. Also if he's under 7 now you'll get lone parent IS and council tax benefit even if they don't consider him to be.
Good luck I hope it all goes smoothly for you"If you don't feel the bumps in the road, you're not really going anywhere "

Apply as soon as possible - you have several weeks to fill in the form.0 -
Thanks for all the advice everyone. It leaves me feeling a lot better about things knowing where to start off and that i should be ok no matter what happens

i would go online and register for dla today, yoou then have about 4-6 weeks to fill it in but they will pay from todays date.
i did this for my son and he has no diagnosis as we have been passed from pillar to post for past couple of years between ed pscy and paeds.
i filled the form in abit everyday and went back when i remembered something. got mrc/lrm.
i hope you manage to sort your faimily out and just take a day at a time - there is very little thinkig time when you have a child liek this my son is home schooled by me so there is no down time.

Ok all registered with them and they said any payments will be backdated to today, thanks for the heads up

I know the feeling morledge there is very little time to do anything other than run about doing the essentials, even a visit to the local shops can take half a day due to complications with the little one, and after that is done there is barely and energy left to want to eat any of it!0 -
You will also get help paying the mortgage interest, although not the capital.
Are you married? if so, the house will be sorted as part of the financial settlement. Otherwise, things can get sticky. Either way the courts are likely to look at your son's needs as being paramount. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Also while awaiting the outcome of the DLA application OP can apply for IS even if the child is over 7 as someone providing significant care to a person who is awaiting the outcome of a DLA application.
Good luck with it all.
