Screeching/howling window.

Hello There,

I have just signed up today and this will be my first time ever on a "questions and answers site".

My problem is this: The windows in my home are very good except, that one window howls and screeches most alarmingly when the wind is getting into high spririts. (The window faces the oncoming weather but is the only one that has disconcerting sound effects!). The windows are the sash-style, (up and down) double glazed. What is the reason for the sound effects? How can it be fixed?

Thanks,

Miss P.

Welcome to the site Miss Poffle. :)

It might be the sound of wing blowing through a narrow gap in the sash windows making the wood and glass resonate, just like a woodwind musical instrument such as a flute or clarinet.

Try adding some thin insulating strips to the sash frame where possible.

Can you feel a draught anywhere? Check and see if that is where the sound is coming from.

Of course it might be a ghost or a ghoul.
  • we have had double glazing installed fairly recently, and have experienced the same problem. it has been rectified by the installer re-applying mastik round the seals. the windows must move a little (or else the mastik settles, i'm not sure which) as other windows are now screetching too ... my OH rectified it in our little boy's room by putting sellotape round one edge.
    worth trying?

    Hi Miss Poffle

    Welcome to the site.

It sounds like there is a slight gap the wind is whistling through. What type of windows are they (wood, ali, plastic)?

First thing, when it happens next time, find out where this is happening. If you listen/feel around the window, you should spot where the problem is. Most likely it could be solved with a bit of draught excluder fitted. There are many types though, and without knowing exactly what/where your problem is, I can't say for certain what type you will need.

  • Thanks Avoriaz,

I will try your suggestion. If it happens to be a ghostie or a ghoulie, then it can stay as long as I can get some sleep!

  • Dear Marge,

Thank goodness I only have one screeching window. More than that would make me nutty (Nuttier than I already am, of course).

  • Rex,

My thanks to you and everyone who replied to my distress call. For the moment, the wind has stopped howling (typical) so I can't run any "listening" tests. My window frames are made of wood and are up and down type sash windows so I can't put anything along the sides because it would just be scraped up as the window went up. I will try all of the suggestions people have given and see if I can come up with a winner!!

    Cheers,

    Miss P.
