My mum lives in Spain and has just treated herself to a new sewing machine I would love her old one so that I can finally learn to sew. Does anyone know if you can take sewing machines as hand luggage? They would be flying by Easyjet. Thanks

Well the weight won't be an issue as there is no limit as long as you can lift it into the overhead locker  as it's unlikely to fit under the seat in front. How does the sewing machine measure up against Easyjet's H x W X D limits?0

my initial thought would be no you cant take it as it may weigh more than the 5kg hand luggage allowance...and also isnt there a needle or sharp objects in it...this would only be allowed to be stored as hold luggage....
To get the definative answer then I think its probably an answer for easy jet customer servicesfrugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

There is no limit on hand luggage weight on Easyjet flights:
From their website:Each passenger may carry one item of hand baggage only, measuring a maximum 56 x 45 x 25cm (including wheels, pockets and handles).
This means…
…one laptop case, or
…one brief case, or
…one handbag/bumbag, or
…one rucksack, or
…one carrier bag, or
...one wedding dress
No weight restriction applies however you must be able to place and retrieve the item of baggage safely in the overhead lockers without assistance. Small items must be placed underneath the seat in front
It would mean that whoever was taking the sewing machine wouldn't be able to have anything else as hand luggage though.
Tojo Ralph makes a good point about needles.
Just measured my sewing m/c in its soft cover and it's well within Easyjet's limits.
Might be a good idea to do as LEJC suggests and confirm it would be OK with Easyjet CS - and get it in writing and take it to the airport just in case you get stopped.0 -
Thanks everyone, my mum would travel with my dad so there would be no problem with that being her piece of hand luggage and he would be able to lift it for her. I know the size is OK and she would remove the needle from it so shouldn’t be a problem from that point. I’ll get her to email Easyjet even though I know they are hopeless with responding!!!0

Just post the needles in a Jiffy bag before you leave UK.0
