Car Hire in Canada vs Trains

Whilst plannign my Canada trip this summer, I checked train prices on https://www.viarail.ca to get an idea of how much it would be for 2 of us to get a return ticket to Montreal from Toronto. I was quite shocked to find it was around £80 each and they journey actually took longer than I expected.
Car hire through https://www.canadianaffair.com is only £25 a day which makes so much more sense. I was wondering if I do decide to go the car hire way, whether its better to hire before I go through Canadian Affair, or would I get even better deals once I am there from the local car hire companies? I'm sure someone here has hired cars in Toronto before so should have an idea of the cost.

Recently did one day one way hire in Canada Quebec to Montreal with Holiday autos. Took the upgrade for two drivers and got a tank of petrol free. So the trip cost £39.50 for a SUV including petrol. NB. Canadian affair have a minimum 2 day hire for one way rentals.0
