  • first of all, im sorry for your loss huge (((hugs))) to both of you.

i also think you should maybe spend the day helping out somewhere, homeless shelter, hospital, even a residential home. spending the day doing something selfless for other people will make you apprieciate the good things in your lives.

whatever you decide to do, i hope the both of you have as best a time as you possibly can.

Many many thanks for all the kind replies and I apologise for not replying sooner but I have been unwell. My heart goes out to anyone in this position at this time of year. LilyMae, I hope you get through it. Hugs to you and your daughter

I know like everything else time will ease the rawness and maybe next year will be different.

DH is of the mindset that we just do whatever we feel like take the day as it comes. We do fancy the zoo though as the animals still need attention. We have decided on just a few decorations, primarily ones that mum loved. Since she was a child she loved snow globes and never had any as she never saw one that she wanted to own and last year she got the most beautiful one. That will go on the mantlepiece. I know she would hate if I didn't do something but I guess I just have to see how it goes.

    Again, thanks for the kindness
  • So sorry for your loss :(

The zoo sounds great, and I like the idea that you are still having a little something Christmassy for your Mum. She sounds like she wouldn't want you to shut the curtains on the world and ignore Christmas completely.

One of the best New Years Eve I ever had was when I had nothing to do and I invited some friends round to watch the Wife Swap marathon on the TV. We had fun "vegging" out and gossiping about the awful people - we only knew it was midnight when we heard fireworks and then carried on watching TV drinking wine :)

Perhaps you and your husband could get a curry on your way home from the Zoo, or have some of your favourite food in the fridge to prepare quickly and have a DVD boxset of your choice to spend away the evening. Shows like Only Fools and Horses and the Vicar of Dibley will feel Christmassy without being in your face about it.

Don't forget to raise a glass of your Mum's favourite tipple :)
