IMHO, the screens on netbooks are too small.

Yes, I know they have small screens by definition ('scuse the pun!) , but do check it is adequate before buying.

You'd be better off getting him a second-hand 'proper' laptop, IMHO!

Netbooks are great, but only if portability and battery life are more important than performance and the presence of an optical drive. Spending £300 on a laptop will give you much better performance than a £300 netbook.

Good points above, however I have a netbook(Sammy N140) dual booting with Linux/W7 Starter (spits) , very light (ok light on performance too) but battery lasts ages (been in the rub-a-dub for 3+1/2 hours ) It runs Virtualbox if needed, GIMP, Libreoffice Thunderbird and Firefox very well ... not much use for an 8 year old I know, but the posters above are giving their opinion as a responsible adult , whereas I am still 9 at heart....

Edited: of course the above and myself are unable to see a 10" screen as clearly as 8 year olds do, mind you they give their opinions on 7"/10" PADS when needed (that being not incontinence pads of course)

  • I just got my son a basic samsung netbook from Argos, was swithering between that and the Asus one and in the end made a decision based on battery life and on which one I liked the look of best, in terms of spec they were pretty similar. Last week Argos has the best prices plus their £20 voucher offer.

Netbook v laptop for kids - having tried my son with different models, I felt a 15 inch laptop was too heavy and too immersive for my son, a netbook seemed just right

Argos ebay shop often have very good deals on refurbished ones. I got one as a gift for someone a few months back, box was tatty but laptop was perfect, not a mark.

Perfect for a kid, get a cheap one before buying him something better when he's older and needs/wants it for school. That way, if he breaks it (and being 8, this is a possibility), you've not spend hundreds.
